(Special Air Mall; Service)

London, July 25. The opcial Air Ministry Bar- rative of the air exercises on Mon- day evening, during the night, and early yesterday morning reveal considerable success by Southland's attacking bombers. The three squadrons of thirty-six machines which made a spectacular attack on the Air Ministry an hour after the opening of operations reached their target without being inter cepted.

Détails given are as follows:-* FIRST PHASE-Evening July 23

The Southland Gordon wing (three squadrons thirty-six air- craft)..." approached · London from Bedford, bombed Air Ministry from -6.000 feet at 19.15 hours.

The attacks of the second and third squadrons followed that of the first squadron so closely that difficulty was experienced at the camera obscura in recording the bombing effects. This Wing attack was not intercepted.

Another target successfully bombed was No. 1 Stores Depot, Kidbrooke, The Southland squad- ron attacking this target was not intercepted.

The Wallace Squadron which bombed the target at Dagenham was attacked twice on its way to the target and once on the return journey.

The second. Wallace Squadron bombed the West India Docks suc- cessfully from 5,200 feet without being intercepted.

Targets at Wormwood Scrubs and the Marble Arch were also at. tacked, the former successfully, Results against the Marble Arch were not recorded.

To summarise:

Out of the seven targets in the London area which were bombed.. four were definitely hit.

One of the reasons why all the raids were not intercepted was probably due to the overloading of and certain lack of smoothness in. the communications. This general- ly occurs in the commenceinent of a peace exercise, but invariably rectifices itself as the proceeds.

exercise

Another important contributory cause of the bombers' escape from interception was the successful manner in which they were handled in approaching their ob- jectives and carrying out their at tacks.

SECOND PHASE-Night of

July 23-24. The night phase commenced shortly after nine p.m. with per- fect weather for night operations.

A Wing formidony of three Southland Gordon squadrons mum- - bering thirty-three älterest came up the Thaines to Dartford, and in three separate squadron forma- tions, attacked targets at Dagen ham, West India Docks, and No. 1 Stores Depot Kidbrooke. AMM
