Mr. Handley Page said the slotted wing had been developed largely to increase. the stability and con- trol of aircraft when stalled, but during the past few years atten- tlon had been directed to its use as a means of increasing ton speed without unduly increasing landing speed. He added:

"There is no doubt that by its use the cruising speed of commer- cial aircraft will be greatly in- creased without any sacrifice of safety in fight or in alighting on the ground. The old figure of 100 miles an hour, often referred to as a reasonable speed for air trans- port, recedes into the bockground. "To-day a speed of 200 miles an hour is spoken of as a possible cruising speed for commercial air- craft, and figures largely in excess of this as requisite for the mili

MADAME SPY

FAY

Úniversal Picture

With Edward Amold, John Miljan -Noah Baery. Screenplay by William Hurlbat. Original by Max Kimmich,

"NIGHT BIRDS

At The Alhambra

This film is one of the host ex. citing detective yarns I have seen on the screen. The story is not very complicated, and it is mixed up with a cabaret, so that one has the pleasure of musical in- terludes.

The hero is a Scotland Yard sergeant who sets out to catch a gang of robber murderers. Their method of murder is as unpleas- ant as effective, by throwing a knife at the victim."

The film should be seen without first reading the programme, as some matters are not cleared up until the end of the play. and therefore it would be unfair to describe it here.

The film does not in any way encourage admiration of gangs- ters, as they are all shown under bad colours. All admiration is re- served for the clever Scotland Yard sergeant who in his plan of campaign, estranges himself tem-. porarily from his wife. The scene where he comes home after being out on business with another pretty woman is highly amusing. His way with woman is as effective as with criminalı.
