The Rass Institute Industrial. Advisory Committee was formed in 1928, and is now incorporated with the London School of Hy- glene, and Tropical Medicine in the University of London. The Institute spécially deals with the health of the worker in the tro- pics and the supply of scientific information to that end to indus- trial undertakings abroad. At their meetlag in the Council Chamber of the Rubber Growers' Association, with 'Mr. . H. Mase- feld presiding, the malaria con- trol and other sanitary work car- ried out at the copper mines in Northern Rhodesia was reported to have been successful, and Mr. Harrison's work on the site of the Zambesi bridge was said to con- stitute a new record in tropical sanitation. Mr. Harrison also vis sited Nyassaland in connection with the selection of healthy sites for railway stations on the exton- sion of the railway to Domir Bay on Lake Nyassa. Dr. Ram- say raised an Interesting point. In regard to borrow-pits, so often the cause of mosquito breeding in the tropics Borrow-pits on clay soll are pot normally dangerous" breeding places. The thousands
of muddy borrow-pits along the roads and railways on low-lying land in Assam and Bengal ate, fortunately, usually free from dangerous mosquitoes: it is only those on land where there is little colloldal eley in the soll that perl- odically become dangerous.
The Eye fly
The eye-fly costs the tea Indus- try thousands of pounds annually, owing to the loss of labour while labourers are incapacitated thr- ough conjunctivitis, and this ques- tion is being discussed with the Department of Entomology at the London School of Hyglene and Tropical Medicine. In co-opera- tion with Messrs. James Finlay and Company, Limited, and the English and Scottish Joint Co- operative Wholesale Society a new research centre has been opened in the Anamallais in Sou- thern India under Dr. J. E. Mea- sham. Here again figures show the reduction in the sickness rate following on and-malarial work. Dr. J. P. Crowden, of the De- partment of Industrial Physiology. a short demonstration at gave the meeting of the experimental work he had been carrying out on heat insulation, with details of the results of field tests in Egypt, London, and at the Nation al Physical Laboratory. These tests showed that the method of insulation by reinforced alumin- ium foil which makes use of the physical properties of bright, and metallic surfaces should contri- bute greatly to the comfort of re- sidents and travellers in hot and cold countries. For the insulation of buildings, the aluminium foll is reinforced with asbestos pa- per to which it is firmly bonded by bitumen. It forms a durable and handy material which is sup-. plied in rolls 100 yards long and 21t, wide, Where greater strength is required the fall is reinforced

One result of the new scheme has been a considerable reduction in the cost of transport of materials. The central machining section, which comprises featly a mile
of bays, is capable of dealing with heavy forgings up to 150 tons in weight, large, steel castings, me- chanical and electrical, and the manufactures of the firm gene- rally, and a number of new ma- chines have been installed. These include centre lathes-up, to 5 ft. swing by $2 ft. long, double-ended boring machines for work up to 24 in. in diameter by 75 ft. long, puncher slotting machines up to 4 ft. stroke, and so forth. It may noted that in these machines, the special tool steels made by the English Steel Corporation at their North Street Works, Openshaw, have been found to give the most satisfactory results in the direc- tion of increase of output gineering."
