Mitan in Shanghai, by the afternoon train
Montevidno Montreal from Nanking yesterday.
The preliminary study of this tari would indicate that rise in the cost of imported articles used by foreigners in their daily Alte may
be expected, as goods such as food-stuffs, olls, gasoline kerosene, rubber tyres, office equip- ment and general classifications have risen, for the most part, trom 2 to 5 per cent. Machinery and metals are among the others that show an increase. Alcoholic be- verages, tobacco, sugar and certain of the cotton, pièce goods appear to be unchanged, while reductions have been made in rare instances such as certain printed cotton plece goods,
In the latter, it is interesting to note that in the change to the metric system a simplification of measurements has been effected, Whereas before, with measure- ments in inches, there were many. now they have been classifed, for the purpose, viz, 62 cm. (22 inches approximately), 82 cra. (31 inches approximately), 92 cm. (36 inches approximately) and 102 cm (41 inches approximately). Although at first sight this appears to be an arbitrary measure, importers may find that it simplifies matters greatly in the long run.
Cotton Piece Goods. Cottton plece goods, grey, appear to remain at about the same duty level, while definite reductions have been made in some of the printed coltons. "Miscellaneous cotton plece goods also show signs of slight reductions in a number of the classifications.
Woollen goods, at first examina- tion, appear to be changed little not at all, the percentage of ad valorem duties remaining ex- actly as before:
Metal and Machinery" Metals, and manufactures there- of. Indicate an increase of 'from 24 to 5 per cent. practically throughout, this increase being particularly noticeable in mac- hinery and tools. All ores, how- ever, remain at 5 per cent, ad valorem, as before.
Vehicles and vessels, which heading includes motor cars, aero- planes and the like, remain with- out change, which will be welcome news, as this duty was considered on the high side. On the other
