Four of the famous Post Office Mauritius stamps were offered for sale at Mr. H. R. Harmer's auction room

New Bond-street, W., In

This was the famous let- ter the only one known in the the **Post world, bearing both Office" stamps, for which the late Mr. Arthur Hind, the millionaire plush manufacturer, of New York! is said to have paid more than had ever before been paid for a single stamp item.

The letter was posted in Port Louis, Mauritius, on Oct. 4, 1847, and by means of the postmarks it is possible to trace it to Plymouth where it was postmarked "Ship-

the letter," and thence across Channel to Boulogne. Paris, and finally Bordeaux, where it reached its destination on Dec. 28, just over seven weeks after it was posted.

The bidding for this letter start- ed at £3,000 and rose steadily to £5.000. at which price it was

knocked down to a German dealer. The next two lots were the id. ↓ crange unused and the 2d. deep blue, also unused. The Arst of these stamps was purchased by Mr. de Silva, a bank director, of
