Special Features
Road.
The Rover Ten represents the. latest example of a well-known model which has been subject to continuous development over a number of years. The 1934 chas- sts and coachwork are consider- ably improved in a number of re- spects and the engine with three- bearing balanced crankshaft is both smoother and more "power- ful. The low-set frame and long wheelbase also provides space for roomy bodies with good head- room and really wide rear doors. Increased engine efficiency has made it possible to raise the gear and the top gear ratio of 4.88 to is somewhat higher than the average for a car of this rating. A freewheel is a feature of the transmission, and the care taken in the mounting of all controls in view of the flexible engine sup- ports is worthy of note. Another point is the use of zinc interles- ves between the front spring lea- tes.
Then a very interesting brak- ing system is used, in which wed- ge-shaped cams are drawn cut to The separate the brake shoes. substition of tension for torsion ir. the brake rods means a min- imum of lost motion while it pro- vides simple adjustment. Finally Wilmot-Breedon stabilising bumper is used, eliminating any vibration in the front end of the frame.

Fast and Quiöt
It does not take long at the wheel of this car to realise that while it is sold as a high-grade Eght car of moderate price it has a performance which equals some models with sporting pre- tensions. The car scales 22cwt.. has a really roomy body, and the engine is under 1400c.c., yet both acceleration and maximum speed, are-most-creditable. The car also handles admirabiy, being low set, well sprung, and provided with light and accurate steering.
Mention thus early might also be made of the brakes. The Gir- ling system ensures that the pe- dal pressure reaches., the shoes without loss, for there are no cross-shafts or camshafts, and all brake rods are in tension. Then excellent compensation is simply achieved between off and near sides and between front and back. front and back. The braking has a pleasantly solid fell, and the amount of effort required is just right. That this system is Ekely to be adopted more widely next a tribute to the Rover year is firm's appreciation of a new but sound design, '-..
The third bearing in this en gine and the flexible mounting provide an extremely smooth run- ning unit which remains quiet at even the highest speeds. Run-
and A ning is really refined. somewhat higher top gear than usual assists this.
Maximum speed is a genuine 65 to 68 m.ph.. although on the da, the speedometer on several occasions showed Just over 70 m.ph. On third the maximum is about 50 m.p.h., and on second 35 m.p.h. A pleasant cruising speed is anything from 40 to 55 m.p.h.
Some idea of the excellent ac- celeration is given by the follow- Irig figures—

The gears are very easy to han- dle in the ordinary way, and with the free-wheel in use the gear lever can be moved as 'desired without use of the clutch so long as the car is overrunning the en- gine.
77
Indirect gears are quiet, and the free-wheel is easily put in and out of action as long as the engine is kept pulling. The clut- ch is smooth in its take up, and the pedals and central controls are all well placed. so that the car is really extremely pleasant to drive.
The finish of the power unit Is better than the average, while Rover coachwork has achieved an excellent reputation for all-round quality. I provides a high degree of comfort and a very complete equipment.
