BROWN'S FINE BATTING

Australia in Good Position

London June 23. Erigland closed their innings in the Second Test on Saturday at Lord's for a total of 440 runs.*

Australia opened their innings events | and at close of play had lost. two polo wickets for 192 runs, or 248 runs behind with eight wickets in hand. There was a crowd of 30,000 in sunny weather when Leyland (95) and Ames 44 resumed their in- nings. They had added 111 runs for the sixth wicket. At 311 one 'ot Wall's fast deliveries took off Leyland's off-stump which did a somersault.

A programme of eleven winding up with water match was followed with keen in- terest by the large gathering pre- sent. There were plenty of com- petitors in every race and the sports were carried on till almost eleven o'clock.

The barid of the Association ren- dered Д pleasing selecting of European music during the night while the Chinese band of the same association contributed a quota to "the evening's success.
