Superintendent Connor reached and took the note before Palmer could grab it. "Mind?" he asked. "This is one of the new treasury notes. Isn't it? Haven't seen one yet."
"Yes," said Revel, carelessly, and reached in his pocket again and brought out another note which he handed to Palmer. "This is one of the old notes but it will buy as many drinks as the new one.”
"You stood me up shamelessív for luncheon," Jane accused him,
"I can explain everything.". "I'm listening."
Even Jane couldn't hear his ex- planation, the honking by im patient drivers was so loud. "Where to sir?" she called, raising her volce over the din.

"Barkston Mansions, driver," he shouted.
To prove to Revel that she had forgiven him for falling to keep his
luncheon engagement, Jane had to go up to his flat to pass approval on it. She said she liked it, and, after telephoning about her father. was persuaded to stay for tea, which she helped to prepare. He set the table and watched her busy at the stove. He took a cookie and
observed that he was famished.

Local Trade
There has been à good deal of discussion lately as to the effect of by-pass road construction on local traders. It is argued that the shopkeepers in a town no longer on the through route lose valuable custom and that hotel proprietors are serious sufferers. in this respect. It Is even said that motorists have to so much farther than they desire before they can get a meal, because suitable places for lunch or dinner on by-passes or outside towns are few and far between. We do not attach any importance to such arguments. As to meals,
is
obvious that
a motorist wishing to lunch at one o'clock would not take a by-pass, but would enter a town at about that hour unless he happened to know of a suitable place of re- freshment on, the road elsewhere in the vicinity. So far as other traders are concerned, they can- not possibly rely to any great ex- tent on "through traffe" for their profits, while local customers will certainly not be deterred from dealing at shops in streets from which such traffic has been diverted. The presence of much "through traffe" often that the police prevent from leaving... their cars in the street for such time as enables them to shop in comfort: in such circumstances stops have to be few and speedy.
