London, May 1 The Cables and Wireless ..com- bine yesterday announced the pay- ment of a 22.p.c. dividend, on its £23,000,000 of 5p.c. Preference stock, or the same rate as has been paid in each of past three calendar years. This leaves the Preference dividend in arrears «from July 1. 1932, but the news clearly satisfied the market, for early in the day the stock gained. 11 points, al- though it reacted slightly later. The payment is, in fact, the best that could have been expected, for in 1932 the 21 p.c. rate was only just covered by earnings, and dur-, ths the past year there must have been a further decline in several sources of revenue.

I. and IC. traffics, though show. ing an improving trend; must have been some 24 p.c. less than in 1932, but as in that year they contribut

d hardly more than 11 p.c. of the

total revenue, the effect of the further fall in 1933 cannot have bean marked. A more important infuence must have been the effect of the fall in interest ratės in the yield on the cable com- panles Investments, which last year provided over 80 pc. of the A sub- parent company's income. stantial reduction under this head seems inevitable, so that it is rea-" sonable to assume that there must have been further gains from the recent economy measures.

Another favourable influence is the evident sharp improvement in Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Co., which yesterday declared "a divi- dend of 6 p.c., against 2 p.c. in each of the two preceding years. This increase should afford approxi- mately £60,000 (net) for the par-

ent concern.

The A. O. F. Corp. has received the following report form their New York correspondents, E. A. Pierce & Co. The main body of stocks drugged listlessly until the foal half hour. We think the chances for a further rally early next week are slightly better than even.

Wheat: Higher on weekly forecast of only light and scattered showers. The market would be very valnerable to heavy rains.

Cotton: The South sold a small amount. Early in the day, prices railie quickly when Far Eastern and Continental demand developed. Talk of mild curtailment was quite pronounced.

Silver: There was heary selling by a local bank. An unknown buyer bought a small amount for May.

Business Done: 250,000 shares.

There was further buying of Rhodesian copper shares yesterday 323
