We are not by any means adopting the alarmist at- titude. We merely bring out these points for what they are worth, and while we realise that it is very "easy to be wise afterwards," we also have in mind that “a stitch in time.”
We understand an enquiry is to be held into the circumstances surrounding the disaster; and we feel that when the verdict has been arrived at. It will sift the many rumours that are now in circulation.

While we in Hong Kong have been constantly receiving news from all parts of the world of major disasters, mine explosions and the like, we have had a com- paratively peaceful time since the [2314 tragic fire at the old King Edward Hotel which claimed the lives or a number of people. have had minor larid slides and even an aeroplane crash although the latter occurred at sea, but those were only slight matters compared to, say the explosion in Macao a couple of years back. On Monday morning, however, the entire community had good cause- not only for anxiety but also for alarm when a muffled explosion was heard to come from the direc- tion of the Gas Company Works at West Point. It was at first feared that this would have had more disastrous results than it did. though the damage actually done was bad enough. The disaster has been fully reported in the locai Press Getting down to facts, we see that one of two of the theories advanced may be correct. The first one, was to the effect that an explosion had occurred in Clarence Terrace and a missile which had blown across the road, struck the gas holder, causings puncture. The gas was then stated to have drifted back to: Clarence Terrace and was ignited by the fires in the houses. The other story was that
