I don't really know whether Mr. Beery's friends call him Wally" or not. But if they don't they ought to. The name Ats. smacks of ponderous plebeian simplicity and a certain elephan- tine hail-fellow-well-metness: It ‹ds, in fact, a pleasant, human, un- And prepossessing sort of name.
it is as a pleasant. human. un- prepossessing sort of person that Wallace Beery has achieved his greatest successes on the screen.
He and Marie Dressler are the "leaders.of what must be the most popular battalion in the non-sex- appeal brigade. They are a prac- tically cast-iron box-office pro- position.
Nathing Herole
The reason for Beery's popular- Ity is that his appeal is based on the common bond of flesh and blood reality. He does not pose as somebody to admire, to won- der at, or to envy. He has no pretensions above our own. He has an equal warmth of feeling and as varied an assortment of. human virtues and vices. There la nothing heroic about Beery. He is not built on the grand scale; and consequently there is nothing li him that we do "not fully understand, and immediate- ly respond to.
He is boozy and amorous and the most miserable, faint-hearted caltiff. Els enormous snout will protrude in slobbery anticipationi of drink or dames and, when he is discovered, his little pig eyes roll in fear and that same impos." ing snout gives an almost audible whimper and twists itself into a timid, conciliatory smile,
He is coarse and vulgar and in- comparably weak with children. A precocious Uttle gutter-snipe can twine him round his fingers. He has a native respect for book- learning. He preserves an in- herent respect and tenderness for the opposite sex despite obvious- ly disilusioning past experiences. He is led by his feelings rather than his mind. gets into a series of absurdly avoidable scrapes,

as an actor-deprived us of the opportunity of enjoying the Beery that we prefer. And, indeed, there were moments in both these. films when the old simple sensual Beery peeped through to the de- triment of the part, but very much to our delight. Preising. for instance, was most effective when speaking on the phone to "Mama."
Exactly the same thing happen- ed in his primarily "tough" plc- tures: "The Big House." "The Se- cret Six" and "Flesh." And in that weakness he reminds one of the Tate Louis Wolhelm, most charm- ing of rough-necks" and most lovable of sheep in wolves' cloth- Ing.

He is, in fact, a sentimental- Ist aren't we all?
And because of his sentimental- ity the falls into line with a very great tradition, which has all too few representatives on the screen -the tradition of the humour of lovably weak humanity-the tra- dition of Dickens and (dare one suggest t?) Shakespeare.
Beery as Falstaf? Indeed, it is a source of per- petual surprise to me that Beery has never been cast as Falstaff. He has everything that the part demands-bluster, cowardice," an- imal appetites, and a keen sense of the joys of comradeship in the travern.
It is pretty Inevitable, having referred to his possibilities as Falstaff, and because of certain. superficial resemblances-notably in physical appearance-that one should draw some sort of com- parison and contrast between Beery and Charles Laughton,
Were it not for fear of instarit certification, I should admit gulte. frankly that of the two I prefer Beery and consider him, within his limits (which are admittedly narrower than those of Laugh-“ ton), to be the superior artist.
Because he has humanity, Re has a strong streak of slyness in his
make-up-but it is the slyness of a child or a dog. He. has none of Laughton's mental cunning, and hence no taint of wickedness. Laughton gives" an intellectualy stimulating per- formance, but Beery's is the more humanly satisfying. Laughton can' hit off with brilliant dexter- ity the salient and superficial traits of his characters-but Beery gives us the true man in
