CHINESE TRADE FAIR

Singapore Merchants Preparing

Singapore April 27.

Thore has seen much activity during the last few days at the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce at Hill Street where a large number of carpenters and mascus are busy altering and im- proving. a portion of the Cham- ber's premises for exhibiting Chi- nese goods and manufactures, many cases of which have already arriv od in Singapore from the various industrial "contres in Ching.

in view of the ampending visit of the Chinese Minister ou Industries and Commerce, Mr. Chen Kung o, who is expected to arrive in the city early next month, the Com- mittee of the Chamber desires that the exhibition and commercial | apartment should be ready by the time the distinguished visitor ar- raves so that he would be in position to advise or suggest on what lines the Singapore Chinese Commercial Exhibition Hall should be run. There has been a pro- posal, it may be recalled, to run a exhibition perpetual commercial along company lines under the auspleies of the institition, but the proposal has not proceeded beyond two sub-committee meetings which decided to shelve the proposition for the time being.

The sub-committee has, however. decided to commence exhibiting the samples and goods already received in a specially prepared section which, in time, it is hoped, will be the Chinese Commercial museam of this city.

Meanwhile, elaborate arrange- ments are being made to give Mr. Chen Kung Po a warm welcome to the city, and over thirty Chinese public associations and guilds have been invited to attend a special meeting this evening with a view to arriving at definite preparations which will tend to, make the visit of China cotommercial envoy £ memorable one. Not since 1900, when a Chinese commercial "and in- vestigation envoy was sent to this Part of the world to report to the Manchu Throne the living condi- tions of the overseas.
