LIGHT ON LHASA
The March Of Progress
Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, po- pularly known as "The Forbid-' den City," is to be illuminated by electric light. No less than 2.000 cases of equipment are on their way over the 400 miles of track that separate the railhead at Dar- jeeling from the Tibetan capital.
"
The order for this equipment was itself strangely in keeping. with the Mysterious City from which it originated." It was wilt-
ten on a scroll of rice paper mea- suring 2 ft. by 4 ft., and was dated "The 21st of the Fourth Month of the Water Bird Year. One of the conditions of the order was that the whole of the material, which is all-British and has been sup- plied by the General Electric Co., was to be packed in cases, and no case was to weigh more than 801b. The items set out, in the rice paper order include 6,000 yards of heavy "cable and 15,000 yards of Bghter cable, so that for the heavy cable alone over 300 cases were required, each containing a 20-yard length.
For the first 200 miles of the Journey pack mules are being used, but after that the nature of the country changes and becomes so rocky and perilous that even mules can go no further," The loads, therefore, have to be trans-

Volunteer Labour Project
new
Kalleng, April 19. A embankment around Kaifeng city to be bullt with volunteer labour is the latest project of the Honan Provincial Government. The authorities, learning â lessori from last year's disastrous floods when the provincial capital was partly inundated by the overflow of the Yellow River, have no wish for a repetition of the disaster:
A public appeal made by the Honan Provincial Department of Reconstruction has evoked ready- "response from the inhabitants. Party, Government and military officials, students, soldiers as well as the general public are now being enlisted for the building operations.
To achieve greater results, the -principle of division of labour will be applied. Students from the different schools, employees' from offcial and civic organiza- tions will be divided into squads work and set, to
on separate sections of the embankment. Work will be started this Sunday under the personal leadership or

Mechanics are inspecting"`the engines and making detall refinements to the structure of the aeroplane. When the craft is again ready for fight, in about three weeks' tline, she will begin a series of experimental flights, with Imperial Airways. pilots at the controls, oven - this country and the continent of Europe. One or more lengthier flights over sections, of the Em- pire al lines will probably be made to demonstrate her speed and efficiency.
More Information has reached me about the behaviour of the new airliner in 'flying trials, which, though the" DE.85 designed, built and flown in re- cord time thorough.

Royal Air Force pilots at Mart- lesham Heath, the British oficial landplane testing station, estab- lished the maximum speed of the machine, with full load on board, at more than 170 m.p.h. and‘fts cruising speed in excess of 145 m.p.h. She is, therefore, the fastest four-engined transport aircraft in the world. Similar tests, still with the machine fully laden, showed that her "stalling" and alighting speed was 86 m.ph. rarely is an aeroplane landed in with full load, and the actual landing speed in practice must be reckoned accordingly at around 60 m.p.h--which la low compared with maximum attain- able speed and reflects excellent aerodynamical qualities.
