A TRIBUTE TO LORD IRWIN'S
VICEROYALTY...
The services of Lord Irwin (now Lord Halifax) to India were com- memorated at New Delhi yester day. when the Viceroy (Lord Willingdon) pressed a button and simultaneously unveiled a statue in white stone and a portrait of the ex-Viceroy.
In the absence of the Mahar- ajah of Bikaner, chairman of the Memorial Committee, the Nawab Ghuznavi, Bahadur Sir. A. A. member of the Executive Council of the Government of Bengal, ex- plained that the statue had been built at the suggestion of the King, by the London sculptor Mr. Reid Dick. AIR DAY ARRANGEMENTS
0
I hear that Air Day, referred to by Sir Philip Sassoon to the House af Commons, will probably be held either on Empire Day or on the following Saturday, May 26,
On whichever of these, dates, is chosen the R.A.F. and civil avia- tion will be At Home to the Bri- tish public at practically every fly- ing centre in the United Kingdom. I understand also that on Air Day civil aviation will extend an RAF. pilots open invitation to to visit civil aerodromes, Where no charge on public funds will be Incurred the invitation 11am told, likely to be
In this way those members of the public who are able to visit Service aerodromes will be able at elv aerodromes to see something of the work done by Service ma- chines.
I may add that in no case will the ordinary routine at civil aero- dromes be interfered with.
GRAND NATIONAL ENTER-
TAINING
Every Grand National ends by out-doing Its predecessors.
One well-known figure however, will be missing from the scene to morrow, since Lord Sefton's attack" of undulating fever will mean his absence from his private" box.
Lord Selton, who is the owner of the Aintree course, shares, with Lord Derby the advantage of be- ing able to entertain his "friends in regal, comfort. They are the only two persons who have their own private boxes and dining rooms in the stands.
A BIG SURPRISE
THE LATE QUEEN EMMA
Royal deaths are said to go in threes Queen Emma completes this number, begun by King. Albert and continued by Prince. Sixte,
I saw Queen Emma'in The Hague only a few months ago. Bhe was riding in the open carriage which she used in all weathers, prefer- ring it to a modern" motor car. Dressed in the fashion of many years ago, she often drove through the streets with as little fuss as possible.

CRESTS AND TOMPIONS
While the naval experts have been discussing submarine safety devices, tonnage, naval bases, and other technical matters, I noted with interest yesterday a splendid plcture of the little publicised tompion..
The picture, which I reproduce, affords a fine view of the tompions of the Hood, The charming de- sign upon these "tomplong which landlubbers sometimes miscall tamptons is the crest of the Hood family, of which Viscount Hood, the 18th-century Admiral, is the most distinguished member.
In heraldic language it shows a Cornish chough proper, resting the flake of an dexter claw on the anchor placed in bend sinister or.
