MALAYA-JAVA PHONE Operating Satisfac- torily So Far
The Malaya-Java telephone service is operating satisfactori- ly, it is understood. but no information is available regard- ing the amount of traffic put through since its inception.
Telephonic communication be- tween Malaya and Javṛ began on Monday, Mar. 19, the service being opened with an exchange of greetings between the Hon. Mr. Andrew Caldecott, the High Commissionef, and the President of the Feople's Council in Java.
The service has been working according to expectations, and no complaints have been received.
"It would be a mistake to attempt to talk about the suc- cess of the service now," sald Mr. V. H. Winson, engineer in charge, S.8. and F.M.S... of the Posts and Telegraphs Depart- ment. The whole thing is new, and naturally it will take a cer- ta'n amount of time before the public will realise the "value of the facilities for speaking to Java
"All I can say," he concluded, Is that the service has been used and is working satisfactori-'. 1y."
43
The service is connected to all the telephonic exchanges in Straits Settlements, Federated Malay States, Johore or Kedah. with the exception of those at Kuantan and Pekan which can- not be included at the present time.

ENGINEERING IN CHINA
RECENT CONTRACTS BY THE NATIONAL GOVERNMENT
Progress Made And New Devices Used
Shanghai, March 27,
That the National Government has many points of contact with the engineering and industrial de- velopment of China bas re- cently been emphasized in three important engineering contracts which have been placed with Messrs. Inniss and Riddle (China), Ltd., Shanghal
The first of these contracts is for a complete power station to be built and equipped at Loyang, for the Central Military Academy, The National Construction Com- mission, Nanking, are acting as consulting engineers for this plant which will consist of a 500 KW. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd.. geared self-contained turbo-alternator condenser set running at a speed of 8.000/- 1,000 r.p.m. and operating at a steam pressure of 205 lbs. per sq. in. at a temperature of 550 degs.
F
This turbo alternator will be supplied from two Babcock and Wilcox W.L.F. type water tube boilers equipped with" Linsi -type mechanical chala grate stokers. Integral super-heaters, induced draft fan and steam and motor driven feed pumps, steel chimney stack, etc.
The alternator will generate at 8,300 volts which will be stepped down for power and Hghting to 400/230 volts. The switchgear for control of the generator, feeders, etc., and the complete Installation and setting to work. also form part of Messrs. Inniss and Riddle's contract.
For handling the various parts of the mechinery in the power. honse a Morris" traveling 'crane will be installed.
This Loyang Station is expected to be placed in .commission be- fore the end of this year.
Peking Power Station
The second projech is a new power station for the National Tsing Hua University, Peking. which will furnish a supply to the University, buildings and also be used for demonstration pur- poses. The principal items in this plant will be a 200. K.W., BTH geared self-contained turbo' al. ternator condenser set, of a simi- lar type to that being supplled for Loyang, running at a" speed of 2,000/1,500 rpm, and 250 lbs. per sq. in. at a temperature operating at a steam pressure of 600 deg. F.. This turbine will be supplied with steam from a Babcock and Wilcox W.I.F. Type water tube boiler with superheater and me- chanical chain grate stoker and the usual accessories.
Incidentally the casings of two 750 K.W. B.T.H. turbines installed six years ago at the Mentoukuo Mines not more than twelve miles from the site of this university, were opened up this year after six years practically continuous, run" ning and the blades were found to be fh perfact condition. The - original oil is still being used in
these turbines.
"Up-to-Date Laboratories
".
"
The National Tsing Hua Uni- versity is now building up-to-date laboratories for electrical and mechanical engineering tuition and research. For these Messrs. Inniss and Riddle are supplying a number of motor generator sets and synchronous motors which are being specially designed by the B.T.H. Co., Ltd., Rugby, also a Morris overhead travelling crane". and a Wild-Barfield electric fur nace, two Tangye horizontal com- pound steam engines and "Exide" high tension batteries, etc.
The third contract is for the National Research Institute (Academia. Binica), Shanghai, which is now, being equipped by Messrs Inniss and Riddle with a B.TH.transformer, two. motor: generators, 800 ampere hour 110 and 24 volt Chloride batteries weighing no less than twelve tons, and a nine panel white marble switchboard for providing multiple direct current and al- ternating current supply to their. laboratories...
The latest method of protecting. aeroplane stays against corrosion is by electrically plating them with cadmium. This system has
· Just been adopted by the National Aviation School at Hangchow where a W. Canning and Co. Cad- mium: plating outfit has been in-
stalled. The China agents, Mes.- srs. Inniss and Riddle, have re- 'cently supplied and installed more than twelve Chromium plating plants in Shanghai, Nanking, Tientsin and Kating
..Shanghal Electric Grid
"Another interesting innovation - for China is the contract placed with Messrs. Inniss and Riddle by the Chapel Electricity and Water- works Co., Ltd., for two 7,500 K.V.A. 22,000/33,000 volt. B.TH/ transformers which will be the first transformers In China to be equipped with automatic "'on- load" tap changing devices which enable voltage variation.to be ad- justed by push button control. They will be used for the trans- fer of power between the Shang- hal Power Co. and the Chapel Co.s' mains.
3,000
Last month two B.TH. KV.A. transformers were put into operation at the new Changshan Road Substation of the Chinese Electric Light and Power Co. for interconnecting 'Chapel. and Nan- tao at 33,000/5,500 yolts.-
The 22,500 KW, (thirty thou- sand horsepower) B.TH. super- efficient turbo alternator which is now being erected in the River side Station of the Shanghai Power Company is expected to be placed in service in about three months time. This set will be the most up to date and-largest unit irf China will be the thirtieth B.TH, turbo alternator on their China Ist.
Electric Ship Propulsion
The first installation of electric drive for marine propulsion on the China coast is that in the Electric Star now in service on the Hong Kong-Kowloon Ferry Service. This consists of 320 K.W. D.C, generator supplying 370 H.P. motors fore and aft. This ferry carrying hundreds of paa- sengers is controlled by one man' from the bridge by means of a small handwheel and it is at least as easily controlled as a motor bus. The electrical machinery is B.T.H. throughout and was in- -stalled and set to work by their China agents six months ago. It has" since been in regular daily service and the results have been exceeded expectations especially as regards reliability and fuel consumption.
Lighting of Public Buildings
Until the opening of the Para- mount Ballroom, coal gas was in- variably used in Shanghai thea- tres and such buildings to pro- vide light. In case of failure of the electrical light supply but this ultra-modem building L equipped with "Keepalite elec- tric "emergency Hghting whereby a Chloride battery which is trickle. charged from the mains and is capable of supplying the emer-
gency lights, is automatically: switched on to supply the safety lights in the event of fallure of the Power Company's supply. This constitutes a great advance on the old gas system as the additional fire risk as well as un- pleasant fumes are eliminated and very much better emergency illumination is provided.
The Tower Clock in the recent- ty opened new Shanghai Race Club is another interesting -ex- ample of modern electric prac- tice. It has four dials each thir teen feet in diameter operated by by a electric movement from a “Pulsynetic master clock which also "synchronously operates some 60 other dials in various parts of the Club's, premises. No winding ́is required and the clock is guar- anteed to keep correct time with- in one second per day. The dials" are automatically illuminated at night and the lights switched off in the morning by an electrical timing. device which forms part. of the clock equipment. All were manufactured in Leicester by Messrs. Gent & Co., Ltd., and sup- plied and installed by their China, agents, Messrs. Inniss and Riddle, who, it will be remembered, also supplied and Installed g Ching" in the Custom House
TEES VERTICAL LIFT BRIDGE
First Of Its Kind In England
The Duke and Duchess of York - visited Middlesbrough on. Febru- ary 28. to enable thë. Duke to carry ont his promise to open the new Tees (Newport) 'road bridge, costing £512,000, over the river, connecting the borough and the North Riding of York- shlie with the country of Dur- ham. Their Royal Highnesses had arrived the previous might in country Durham, being received at Darlington railway station by Lord Londonderry, the Lord Lieu¬ tenant, and by the Mayor and Ma-. voress of Darlingtote, and had spent the night at Wynyard Park as the guest of Lord and Lady Londonderry. When the Duke and Duchess arrived at Middlesbrough about 11.30 am, the streets were crowded and the Royal visitors were given an enthusiastic wel- come along the route to the bridge approach.
Here a very simple ceremony had been planned. "After the Dake had inspected a guard of honour of the 1st Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry, commanded by Major E T. Heslop, and a num- ber of presentations had been made, an address of welcome was read by the Mayor of Middles- brough (Councillor A. Cooper) in the names of the Durham County Council and the Corporation of Middlesbrough. The Duke then declared the bridge open. He said it was the first of its kind in this country, and the largest of its type In the world. He congratulated the engineers, Messrs, Mott, Hay and Anderson, and the contrac-" tors, Messrs. Dorman, Long and Co., Ltd. The Duke received a sliver cigarette, box with an en- "graved
representation of the Bridge Joint Committee as a me merito of the occasion. After- wards the Duke and Duchess were the guests of the Joint Committee at luncheon in the Town Hail,
Sash-window Motion
The river is
The Tees (Newport) Bridge is the latest and in some respects the most interesting of four great new bridges crossing respectively the Tees, Wear, Tyne, and Tweed: It is the only vertical lift bridge in this country črossing a navig- able river near its mouth. The first glimpse of the stricture with its 170ft, high towers of structura: steel on either bank and its lack of support from any pler in the bed of th eriver recalls the cut- lines of Tower Bridge, London, but Its principle of construction is of course, "different.. .spanned by a 38ft, wide roadway, 20ft, above high water level, but when shipping is passing the
raised whole roadway is
by weights suspended by 180 steel ropes attached to the ends of the bridge and passing over sheaves,, 15ft. in diameter, at the top of the towers. The motion is thus that of an ordinary sash window," yet the weight of the bridge is " 2,700 tons, and as the counter weights are of equal weight, the pull on the bearings of the shea-. vés in the towers is thus 5,400 tons,
An unplanned item of this morning's, programme after the Duke had inaugurated the bridge by switching on the electric cur- rent operating the starting gear, and after everybody had seen the bridge slowly descend from its "closed to traffic" position at the top of the towers to the road level, was the Duke's request to stay on the bridge while 10 was pulled up again. The Duke and Duchess and their party and many of the guests had the' experience of be- ing
fted up: 9911, and surveying the wide prospect on either hand from this elevated position. The river surface; on which a steamer
were seen moving directly under the bridge, was then more than 1201t, below.
The addition to the programme served to demonstrate the smooth.... ness of the "motion of the enor- mous moving load. Not a tre- mor or a jerk could be felt. The time taken to lift the bridge through its 99-foot rise was a min- ute and a half, and the descent The took about the same time. winding machinery for controlling the movement of the lifting span is worked electrically from the public mains through twở 32-h.p. motors. In case of failure of the mains supply a 450-h.p.. petrol engine is installed. All three mo- tors are place in a cabin on the top of the girders from which the bridge platform is suspended.
Span of 270ft '
A notable feature of the bridge is its width of span-270ft.--which is 70ft, wider than the clear way left between the piers of Tower- Bridge over the Thames. No
in other moving bridge this country leaves anything like so wide an uninterrupted. fairway. The Tyne swing bridge at New- castle has two separate openings of 1021. the Keedby Bridge over the Trent spansTM 1601t. of water, and the Manchester Ship Canal bridges are 90ft, and 120ft, respec- tively,
The original plans of Messrs. Mott, Hay, and Anderson, Limited, who" designed the Tees (Newport) Bridge provided a span of only 200 ft., but the Tees Con-
Commissioners caused servancy the joint bridge authorities to call for a revision of the plans. The alteration Increased the cost of the the bridge by £50.000, but the to- tal cost has been kept more than £100,000 below the estimates for the bridge of wider apati, The Ministry of Transport is providing 75 per cent. of the cost.
Electricaly Welded Appreach
Bridge
The siting of the bridge in the Newport district of Middlesbrough instead of nearer the coast was a subject of controversy during the yearsof preliminary discussion, but the bridge actually cross the Tees at or near the place suggested by Professor Abercrombie, of Liver- pool, who perpared regional plans for industrial districts north and south of the Tees af Middles- brough in 1921. The new bridge is over a mile up-stream from the . transporter bridge of 1911 and about two miles below the Victoria Bridge at Thornaby, Its con- struction at Newport saves motor traffic about eight miles on “a Journey through Middlesbrough..to the coast road north, On the Middlesbrough side approach

road of " some 200 yards involved the de- molition of some old houses and the rehousing of the occupants, and on the County Durham de a. road 1,200 yards long had to be made and carried over meadows on an embankment and over a new five-span bridge.
This sp- proach bridges is the first, steel bridge in this country without a rivet in it. Its parts "are elect- rically welded throughout.
Before journeying to Middles- brough the Duke of York, accom panied by Lord Londonderry, paid a. shot private visit of inspection to the Billingham group of works of Imperial Chemical Industries, where he saw the nitrogen factor les and the plant in course of con- struction for the manufacture of motor oil from coal. After lun- cheon in Middlesbrough the Duke" and Duchess returned to London by train from Darlington,
