SIR EDWARD ELGAR

When the famous English com Poser Sir Edward Elgar died on February 23, a void was left in the musical life of Great Britain which will not easily be filled. 'Indeed, Elgar had won for himself the foremost place among English composers, and even the young

elements in the world of music, claiming the privilege of youth in

musicians of all tastes and factions that a Master had arisen among them, and when Dr. Richter began' to conduct the well-known Halle Concerts, and thereby made the town of Manchester the centre of

gravity for England's musical life, he made a special point of per- forming all the new works at Elgar. On the European continent Elgar had already begun to rouse interest, and when in 1902 his

work, "The Dream of Gerontius" was performed at a German musical' festival, the authorities there, including Richard Strauss, halled him as a genius

and a master craftsman.
