Bachmann gave essentially the same reason for this policy as Shacht, namely a devaluation of Swiss franc would make the import of raw materials correspondingly dearer while the monetary advantage of the export premium would soon disappear as wages rose to the same level as in the surrounding countries. Never theless Bachmann, admitted that the general level of prices in Swit- zerland would soon have to adjust itself to that of more other export countries, but asserted that this is quite possible if rents were redu- ced and the cost of living lowered by lessening the difference between wholesale and retail prices.
