Mr. Leo D'Almada e Castro, Junior, Elected New

„A comprehensive review of the work of the Kowloon Residents' Association was made by Mr. C. E. Terry, Pre- sident, at the Annual Meeting of that body held at St. Andrew's Church Hall yesterday, a large number of mem- bers being present.

Several matters of interest to Kowloon residents were raised, and the hope was expressed that the cutting down of the trees in Nathair Road would be permanently aban. doned.
The departure of the Rev. W. W. Rogers was referred to by the Chairman who said that the Association could ill afford to lose his services. He was created an honorary life member..
Mr. Leo D'Almada e Castro, junior, was elected as the new President of the Association.

CHAIRMAN'S SPEECH Addressing the meeting Mr. Terry said:
Ladle's and Gentlemen:-With your permission, I will follow the usual procedure and take the Re- port and Accounts for 1933
as read, as they have been in your hands for the prescribed period.
I do not propose to enlarge upon the work of the past year: the un- written motto of this Association has always been "By our works shall ye know us" and I am con- tent to leave it at that. Some developments since the publication of the Report, however, are worthy of comment.
Of paramount importance is the Central British School; I am glad to be able to state that the ad- ditional ground asked for by this Association to be definitely set aside for Playing "Grounds for the School has now been ear-marked | for this purpose. We are informed that an area comprising 13 acres in all has been allotted: although 3 certain percentage 01 this acreage will be taken up in grad- ing, slopes, etc., the resultant extra playing field accommodation will be slightly in excess of the mini- mum requirements as recommend- ed in our submissions to Govern-
ment.
This I think you will agrée, is most satisfactory: the mere allo- cation of this ground, however, is not enough we are still wait- ing for the School! On the con- firmation of the decision of "Go- vernment to erect a Mental Hos-
modation, however, has been and continues to be taxed to its utter- most. I had hoped to be able to report at this meeting that the first child had been born in the Maternity Block of the Kowloon Hospital; this block. however, is still not available for the purpose for which it was built. The new block of Nurses' Quarters, although completed, has not yet been taken over; the other new block known as "C" block, while completed some time ago, has only recently been taken into use. The urgent need (ons might almost call it a "crying" need) for maternity facilities in Kowloon is too evident to need further stress; it should be totally unnecessary for expec- tant mothers to be faced with the journey to Hong Kong, and the long overdue provision of these facilities at the Kowloon Hospital should not be further delayed.

realised, however, that while trees Governor Gives Bride A. D. C., Lt. Col. and Mrs. G. T.
which have taken BJ or 100 years to grow to splendour can be felled in half an hour, the replacing of them is an inpossibility. In this connection, I would draw the at- tention of any of you who have not so far seen it to the excellent photograph reproduced in the

Appeal For Support One fact which does emerge with startling clarity from this and similar instances, however, is the fact that the need for such an Association as ours, whereby, the views of residents are coalesced and made available to Government, is real and ever present. Although we have no oficial status, we re- present at least the view point of our 400 members, and they in their turn represent their own sectionS of the community; our collective voice therefore is one which merits, and will I am sure continue to receive the attention of all con- cerned with the administration of Kowloon. It merits also, however, the active support of all those who benefit from the labours of the Association, and I would ask all those residents of Kowloon who are not so far on our list of mem- bers and who sympathise and agree with the work of the Asso- ciation to give us their moral support by the addition of their names to our roll.
