"In Great Britain the rise in the price of raw cotton has not been met by any appreciable increase in that of yarns, ete, but has Jargely had to be added to work- ing costs. Consequently, there la a tendency to resort to shorter Working hours rather than accept poor prices offered for cotton goods.

This state of affairs is said to be typical of the whole of Europe with the exception of Germany, which reports a better af and cloth demand. although even in that country, it is admitted that prices are not moving in the same upward direction as those of faw cotton.
"As cotton is not grown in Great Britain the advance in the price of the raw material does not directly increase the purchasing power of any section of the British public. The higher prices, however, by adding to the buying power of India, America and Egypt should eventually lead 14 Increased sales of manufactured- goods to those countries.
