The Creation Of A Model

Gown

HOW INSPIRATION COMES TO OUR LONDON DRESS

DESIGNERS

This is the story of a piece of cloth, a pair of scissors, and a dress designer. It is the story of the creation and emancipation of the model gown.

Imagine, then, a young man seated at a white enamelled desk. In front of him, there lies sketch pad, and at his side there dozens of coloured crayons.

At first it seems that the young man is just idly sketching beauti- ful women until it is time for his next appointment. If you look a little closer you will notice that the young man is not scribbling. but is, carefully and with extreme precision, designing a model frock.

Tramlines

Early that morning the young man had suddenly, and for no apparent reason, thought of some tramlines. This did not worry him unduly, and he ate his break- fast with a normal appetite, but later in the day his green velvet showroom was invaded by alik specialists who brought with them dozens of samples of fabrics. Among them was a small piece of dull, steel-grey brocade.

When the young man saw this his mind leapt back to tramlines So -tramlines-tramlines. ordered several yards of the grey material, and hardly had the silk merchants bowed themselves out before he was absorbed in 'his' sketch- pad again.

First he drew a slender, elegant Then woman with blonde hair.

he gave her scarlet nalls with lips to match. and then, with great care, he 'clothed her in a' gown of dull metal-grey not a bit like tramines to you or me, but very reminiscent to him.

When he has removed the pins. the man will engage you in an earnest discussion hon politics, or a vivid description of the ninth hole at Sunningdale, and when at last you have reluctantly left, this golfer-cum-huntsman-dress desig- ner will order his car and say to his chauffeur: "Drive fast, be- cause I want some new ideas for model gowns.".

Two hours later he will be dart there, saying, "Another please; just a little more fullness here "

And from there on the story is the same..

Lane, Crawford

Lane, Crawford's are displaying their new consignment of after- noon and semi-evening- dresses. Amongst several of their smart models noticed was one in a brown and gold, with lowback and puff sleeves. Then there was another in a Royal Blue with plaid collar and cuffs which would look very smart on someone very fair.

The red silk frock with a big bow and fancy trimming was another striking one, and the green Agur. ed silk with wide flared sleeves should be just the thing for the coming warm weather. All these dresses are moderately priced at $29.50.

The lot of the newsreel camera- men is not always an enviable one but there are times when their work appears to be more fascinat- ing than any other. occupation in the world. One very good example of this is when they have to Alm the fashions and proof of this may be had by: a visit to the King's Theatre any time from Thursday to Saturday when "Walls of Gold" the feature film, will be preceded by a really intriguing the "short" entitled "Filming Fashions."
