DEVELOPMENT OF ELECTRICITY

Ottawa, Canada. Cheap elect- ricity, developed. principally from abundant water-power, is steadily revolutionizing conditions in homes and factories throughout Canada Electric power is chea- per in some parts of Canada than. elsewhere in North America. In Ottawa, for example, it is sold for domestic use at less than one cent per kilowatt hour.

Recently complied statistics show that there are about 1,500,- 000 homes in the Dominion wired for electricity. This total repre- sents about three-quarters of all the homes in Canada.

The introduction of electricity means placing the possibility of several additional comforts and conveniences in the home, such ea lighting, electric coolding, re- frigerators, water heaters, wash- ing machines, humidifiers, clocks, and other devices, that can be operated by merely turning a switch and at a cost that is very nominal

Asim Lands, Limited, has received the following report from their New York correspondente, E. A. Pierce & Co. Belling carried the market to a point which technically signifies but little importance. We would prefer side-lines buying on the side, pending further developments. The auto- móbile strike has been postponed until Monday, as labour leaders are endeavouring to get all the plants to join the movement.

Wheat: Some selling pressure and farther. reports of rains in thể South-West caused scattered liquidation and the market is now awaiting. some new incentive.

Cotton: Market dull. Sentiment is mixed and many are awaiting definite action on the Control Measure.

Silver: Market steady but irregular. There was heavy transferring of March.contracta into latar deliveries.

The extent to which electricity is used in the mining and metall- urgical industry is indicated by the fact that this industry uses between 13 and 14 per cent of the total power generated by Cana- dian central stations. In the lum- ber industry, which uses large amounts of electric power, statis- tics show that, exports in 1933 were one-third greater, than in the peak year of 1912.

Electric continues to be used in industry in increasing" amounts. Because of the absence of moke and fumes and account of the ac- curate, control of temperature, electric furnaces are being widely adopted by mines for underground. tempering and sharpening of drill steel, also for assay work. In 1933 there was a considerable increase in the use of electric atean gen- erators, particularly in the pulp and paper industry, as an econ- omical means of providing process steam..

Hydro-electric power develop- ment during 1933 was confined. | to undertakings Initiated in pre-

vious years," and put into opera tion 270,000 additional horse- power, bringing Canada's total installed capacity up - tọ 7,330,260 horse-power. Thers are still many millions of horse-po- wer unharnessed.
