FIERCE AND BLOODY FIGHTING
SERIOUS SITUATION
IN AUSTRIA
Hundreds Reported Killed And Wounded
SOCIALIST LEADERS FLEE
FROM AUSTRIA
(Special to "Hong Kong Daily Press")

Vienna, February.13.
Fierce and bloody fighting which raged in a large part of Austria on Monday between armed Marxist workers of the one hand and Police and military on the other lasted throughout.. the night in some of the capitals and in outlying districts as well as in some industrial centres in the provinces, but towards Tuesday morning it became clear that the Government's forces were gaining the upper hand everywhere and the revolutionary uprising attempted by the Socialist Schutzbund was doomed to fallure.
An official communique issued on Tuesday morning, states that the task of clearing all buildings occupied by the Reds had been successfully accomplished except at Linz and some iso-. lated districts in Upper Austria.
The Police are also still busy in some capitals and suburbs in driving the Reds out of their last place of retreat, but otherwise the situation appears to be under complete control.
The number of casualties is not ascertainable yet, but may, Oficial reports · well run into hundreds of dead and wounded. speak of fourteen dead and 12 wounded in Vienna, eleven dead and twenty four gravely, wounded in Upper Austria, 37 dead and upwards of 100 wounded in Styria, but these figures do not take into account the losses suffered by the Socialist side which pro- bably will far exceed those of the Police and the Military
The outstanding result of Monday's event is the complete sup- pression of the once powerful Socialist Party, with the prospect of its being entirely eliminated from Austria political life.
All Socialist leaders except the National Counsellors Bauer Deutch who are believed to have fled abroad have been arrested.
