Mr. Y. S. Chang rode the panles from the "Dynasty" stable, while Mr. Marshalj tried out the candidates belonging tɔ Mr. H, S. Chan.

Among the ponies which Mr. Chang rode on Saturday were Hetman, Trenthridge, King's Warden, King's Fancy, King Willow. Bran. Tub and Monoplane.

There were several excellent gallops and the "Soldler" stable monopolised attention Soldier of Britain went over three-quarters of a mile in 1.38, finishing in 29.3. LAST LUNCHEON

She had told Fiala that she did uot love him and could not become engaged to him as gently as possibir, but she could not forget the strange way in which he received her words, He did not rave or ory, na she expected him to, but was very quiet and courteads. After she had jilt ed him he was always very polite to her, but he grew pale and thin

A few days before he committed suicide he asked her to have lun cheon with him at the little luach room in the institute, and to please him she accepted.

Fiala was very insistent that she should eat the sandwiches bu had brought with him, for the cheese in them had come specialty from his father's farm in the country,

Fraulein Grubauer ate them, thanked him for the meal, and di not see Fisla again until he was dead.

For a few days after the die- povery of the auicide-Fiala killed himself with a pistol she manageri to shake off the grim words that had been contained in the farewell letter:

At night, however, she found she would not sleep because of a series of haunting nightmares that kept recurring, and soch during the day she found she could not eat. “

and to She began to gray thinner a be fatigued at the slightest exertion. Her mother, fearing that Fiala's letter was preying upon her mind, took her to sec. a mental healer.

He told her that all her illness was in her mind and, that she must think that she was well; if she did that she would be well.

"..

Berta Grubauer thought and thought, but she did not get any better. She got worse, instead, and doctor soon became so ill that a friend who also worked at the pat- hological institute was called in to examine her.

He inade & sensational discov. exy. He refused to believe that the girl was dying--and she was dying because of a spell cast over her by a dying man.

He took specimens of her blood aul examined them at the institute,

He then announced that the girl was suffering from a species of ty- phoid fever that had never before been known to science-that- ber blood contained four different kinds of typhoid germs, and never bo- fore had a person been attacked by all four a vice.

Buspicious, the head of the in- | stitute went into the laboratory to take out the vials containing speci men germs, which were kept in u rupboard

They were gone. A porter sa- nounced that Fiala had taken them on the morning he had gone with. the girl be loved to luncheon,

Unquestionably, studying as he did the effects of poison germs, he had considered how he could make Berts Grubauer follow him to the grave after he had committed sui- vide.

He bad decided to kill her, but despising the crade ways of other mer, he had obviously tried a more subtle and more terrifying method.

The cheese sandwiches he and the girl had eaten, had boun sprinkled with millions of typ hoid germs taken from the sto lea vials. That a man or woman would succumb to them seemed almost certain.

The young murderer, waiting on the other side of the grave, was al-

most right in his deductions. Ter-, ribed of the efferts of the germs up. on himself he had shot himself with pistol but Frauleju Grubauer lin gered on, fighting a scourge that Beomed daily about to engulf her. The bent brains of the pathologi cal institute were concentrated upon her case, however. At the moment she is convalescing from her illness,
