New Director" Of Torpedoes

London, January 24 Оп leaving the Admiralty to take command of the battle cruiser Renown, Captain H, R. Sawbridge, O.B.E., will..be succeed- ed as Director of. Torpedves and Mining by Captain W. B. Macu kenzie, late in command of the aircraft carrier - Hermes in China. The post of D.T.M. .came into existence on March 1, 1917, when Admiral Sir Frederic Dreyer, then a captain, became Director of Naval Ordnance in succession to Admiral Sir Morgan Singer. The opportunity was then taken of re- moving the Torpedo Department, which had formerly been a branch of the Ordnance Department. from the contral of the D.NO.. and the late Vice-Admiral Sir Maurice Fitzherbert was appointed as the first Director of Torpedoes and Mining.
Captain Mackenzie specialized in torpedo duties in 1907-8, and, during the War was torpedo oficer of the battleship Royal Oak in the 28 Grand Fleet. Promoted to Captain in December, 1924, he commanded. the cruiser Emerald during ber completion and trials in the winter of 1925-26, and in 1926-23 was in command of the Anti-Submarine School and Flotilla at Portland. In 1828-29 he commanded the cruiser Darse in the Mediter- ranean, and for the next two years! was in command of the Signal School. He has just completed 35: years In the Navy.,
