AN AID TO HEALTH

One does not need to make an intensive study of dietetics, but a working knowledge of the dif- ferent kinds of foods and what they do for the body is invaluble.

A well-balanced meal for the average person. In average health contains protein, to take care of the muscles, bones, and tissues: fats or carbohyrates or sweets to supply onergy and heat; cleansing agents or roughage, which act as regulators; miner- als, also, useful to the tissues and body fluids; and vitamins, which are absolutely essential to health

and well-being.

Plenty of liquid is necessary, too, to keep the body in good working order; but many people find it best to take most of this between meals.

CARE OF THE HANDS!

Washing the hands at this time of year is souseless that many people would seem to persist in it merely from force of habi rather than because any real re- sult can be achieved. The main thing is to try to prevent dam. age rather than to curse it. Siri- ple preventives can be used, such as oll for preventing cracks and lemon fot cleaning of stains. Potatoes, apples. "ad, Indeed. vegetables. generally in almost. indelibly, unless a piece of lemon Is kept with which to erase them. "This acts like a charm and pre- vents a great deal of rubbing. which makes for soreness. It is a mistake to think that washing clothes or stockings makes the hands clean. It makes them soft

and easily cracked, and the hands should be well rubbed with gre- ase or áll, before this process takes place. Afterwards they can be ofled again. Washing-up. even with a mop, is often de- trimental to the hands, and here soda should of all things be wolded. A little soap in the wa- ter answers every purpose. Where the hands have become really cracked and look dirty no matter what is done to them there must be a long course of greasing, es- pecially during bed-time, when they can remain greased for some hours. A clean, loose pair of chamols leather gloves on the top of agood greasing does won- ders for the hands in one night alone. Constant wearing of them almost keeps the hands right by themselves. Many people "wash their hands in small basins of hot water into which they have poured olive oil This also helps greatly to keep the hands soft.

To those who do not really..en- Joy it. or who would rather, be about some other business, house- keeping is a dragon"with many heads. They have to be dealt with one by one; but "mercifully some of them are more important. than others and once you get the more aggressive ones under control the others become more docile.

The catering problem is un- doubtedly the first to be dealt with.. Human beings can exist in all sorts of uncomfortable сод- ditions, but not without food, and' the better this is the inore serene. the household is likely to be

You can add eggs, meat or fish; butter of an oll dressing with the salad; bread or another starchy product and some kind of sweet.
