I was told the other day that a group of about ten families of German agriculturists – farmers, former colonists in Russia, who are now in Peking, are contem- plating coming down to Hong Kong with view to taking up farming in the New Territories. KEEN AMBULANCE

WORKER

Over a cup of tea, a prominent Chinese gentleman in Hong Kong. who is a keen worker for St. John, Ambulance Brizade, showed me a gift he had received from the Earl of Scarborough, 'recently. It was in fact a Christmas gift and took the form of a book record- ing the work during recent years of the order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. He said: "A bad practice: In.. which motor drivers and foot passengers share the bláme almost equally is the failure to give way to each other. Many drivers will not give foot passengers a chance of crossing the road unless there 15 some authority present to "en" force this right foot passengers on their part often deliberately walk slowly across the road or keep in the roadway. YELLOW RIVER OVERFLOWS

Many Lives Lost: Villages Inundated

Peking, January 26. The sudden rise of the Yellow River has jeopardised huge areas and many lives have been lost, 'some of them by drowning and others by exposure.

The dykes have given way in the Changyuan, district in South- Hopel. where thirty-eight villages have been "inundated al- ready and more are threatened.

Some of the villages are under ten feet of water.

Hundreds of villagers rendered homeless by- the devouring waters have perished from cold and hunger.

The present flood is declared to "be" worse than that of last year. in which Changyuan also suffered very severely. Reuter.

MOTOR LIFE BOATS

Four New Ones To Be- Ready Soon

Löndon, January 36. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has laid down four new motor lifeboats which will be ready for service in the late summer. The boats will each carry a crew of seven with ac- commodation for thirty passen- gers and will be stationed at Cromer, Norfolk, Maryport, Cum- berland, Coverack, Cornwall and, Flamborough, Yorkshire.

THE RIGHT SPIRIT

Just as in motoring, accidents are sometimes traceable to wrong thinking. so in the field of sports z false sense of right and wrong leads to much misunderstanding I have in mind the suspension of

He would never forgive me for disclosing his name.

THE COLD SNAP

The cold map during the week kept most of us guessing as to the temperature; and although it felt quite cold, the temperature was by no means near the low level record. Residents in Hong Kong of many years standing, can temember WHLITY Occasions on which it was very much "colden Incidentally it is surprising how little the average, man knows of the temperature of the day, During the past three or four
