Born 54 years ago in Northern Greenland, Rasmussen travelled the Arctic farther than any other Euro- pean, but his most dramatic discovery was when he found the bodies of two of the members of the ill-fated expedi tion led by Sir John Franklin which had been seeking the North-West Passage 80 years before.

This discovery be, revealed in an adiresa in 1928 to the Royal Geogra phical Society.

Other plans for revenue-pro- ducing activities have been fram- ed, and will be put into operation as soon as the necessary finance is forthcoming.

Scope For Development "The Society has now reached the point," state the signatories to the appeal, where It must either be recognised as an organi- sation worthy of national support, or else cease to exist altogether. In the latter case, most of the work which has been done will be wasted, and there will be no or

"We ran up to them and saw that they were white men. They were thin, with sunken cheeks, like starving men.

"We took them to our tent and gave them Real meat and blubber.

"They pointed toward the south, toward the Great Fish Hiver, and made signs by which we understood that they had formerly been many comrades together, but few were left.

Afterwards, at another time, we found their ship. It was out in the ice between King William's Island and Victoria Land.

"Many dead men were in the ship," and we could see that they had died of a sickness. Also there was found

boat with six dead men. There was food enough, and it seemed that these also had died of sickness."

The tragedy of the Franklin Expedi tion, which baffled the world for years, and was never satisfactorily explained is one of the most mysterious "and dramatic episodes in Arctic history.

Sir John Franklin was appointed to the "command of the expedition in 1846. It consisted of the Frebus and Terror with 134 officers and men. The vessels sailed from Greenhithe on May 19, 1848 and were last seen on July 28 by a whaler in Baffin Bay.

Fifteen Search Parties, Fifteen expeditions were sent in search of Franklin's ships..

A record found in a cairm at Point Victory told the history of the expedi- tion down to April 25, 1848. It related that the Erebus and Terror wera de- serted three days before, having been. Kanisation to deal with the beset by the ice for two years.
