CHRISTMAS EVE AT THE
PENINSULA
There was a Gala Night at the Peninsula on Sunday. The Rose Room was packed, and Mr. Plovanell bad contrived, with the aid of whistles, toys, paper caps, and bunches of mistletoe. to make us forget-we were spend- ing Christmas in the tropics. At each side of the room was a long table. with a real Christmas tree in the centre, hung with tinsel and brightly coloured glass balls. and it with tiny candles. One of these tables was occupied by a large Chinese party, headed by Miss Tang, and the other by Mr. and Mrs. Croucher and their guests. Mrs. Croucher was ex- tremely chic in a lovely dress of dark green crushed velvet, and a paper, hat worn at an acute angle enhanced her Continental beauty. Mr. Croucher WELS dancing with Miss Hay Eadie: she was wearing illac velvet with plaited shoulder straps of silver tissue, and a short coatee of aliver brocade which she discard- ed later in the evening. Mrs. Stevens looked wonderful in pure white with a black buckle as her only decoration. And Miss Pat Master was in green' frock of many frills, somewhat reminis cent of the dress she wore as the Jade Lady in the Pantomime.
HATS, CAPS, AND FURBELOWS
One of the most striking figures among the dancers war General Maurice Cohen in a scarlet fez- Several couples carried "small paper umbrellas, and a cheerful party, consisting of Mr. 'Musson and some friends from the Far East Aviation Company, had come down from Lauchau armed. with full-size glided musical in- struments (with which' they as- sisted the band), Mr. Fahn- stock, owner of the luxury yacht, had a table, and so did Mr. P. W. Goh, Secretary of the Hong- kong University - Photographic Club. Major Duclos was dancing, and I saw Mra. Meffan, from the Little Shop, in an attractive black frock with a flowing white scarf. Mrs. Begg was looking delightful in black, with cowl collar and puff sleeves of white velvet. Also in Black I saw Misa Bylvie Hooper, that tall and striking, blonde from Shanghai; and in the same party was Miss Olivia Hakshaw, very charming in a de- licate shade of pink. In one of

THE RIDERS
We had an excellent ride, though it seemed to be over far too quickly. Dorcas and Jasper went off on excursions of their own, and the whole pack had a short but exciting run after a too-inquisitive black chow; Mr. Allen spent a hectic few minutes
