OLD FASHIONED
CHRISTMAS
Snow and Frost Expected in England
Fierce gales and frost presage what is known as an old fashion- ed Christmas" at home, although, of... course the meteorological authorities may have good reason for the bellef that the traditional uncertainty of Albion's climate will intrude to upset, calculations. There is always a thrill in these j'occasional messages in winter- time with their picture of the turbulent waves dashing on the deserted beaches of a grey-bound December England. And the news of the temporary cessation of the Cross-channel cargo services throws into strong relief the mat- ter-of-fact performance of the unnamed tug outside Deal That embodiment of the ribald motto "sallors don't care," went out from Dover to assist distressed barque Lawhill and apparently did the job. Yet the passenger steamers which link England with the Continent could not put out from Dover. That was only one of the episodes of what is described as the worst gale küown in the British Isles for six years. Unhappily for skaters the pro- Navý-Lieut. PN.
