It started in a small place where a number of workman were pre- paring cotton to make matresses. They were smoking at the time, and "through their carelessness. the cotton was ignited. The houses being built completely of wood, and very dry, it was not long before the fre spread to neighbouring houses, and many of had to flee without the people being able to save anything. The Are raged furiously for over three bours before it was brought under control. Not only was a large foreshore burned, 'section' of; the

As far as can be ac counted there were only two casualties. An old mun in the excitement, instead of leaving the building, went to the top hoor, and his daughter-in-law ran after him to save him. Before they could get out of the building, the whole first floor was a tumace and shortly the walls collapsed. they being burned to death. The fre department did: good work: with their three man-power ·má- chines and оде motor: engine. Through their efforts undoubtedly a large portion of the city was saved.
