AT THE GARRISON HALL

Wednesday night's dance al- the Garrison Hall was & most enjoyable affair, though I notk ed a certain reluctance on thi part of the guests to carry out Mrs. Borrett'a suggestion that for once in a way people should split up their parties. Perhaps it Was too much to hope for in Hongkong, but there is a lot to be said for getting to- gether.", don't you think? Even at a semi-official" party such as this was,

There were 80 few civilians that I feel tempted to reverse the usual order and“ mention them first. Mr. and Mrs. Oliver were present. she wearing a most beautiful dress of rich black velvet. I saw Mr. and Mrs, Cock, too; she was in black gloves and a sleek-fitting gown. The Dow blginns were. there, Joan

Miss Witham in crushed strawberry, Miss Alabas ter in 'black lace with a pale green broche cape, Miss Mackle In a greenyblue satin. and Misa Henderson in brown, with a cape of some intriguing yellow-spott- ed material

* OUR HOSTS » Next we will deal with the Army, they being our hosts for the evening. Mrs. Borrett was most stately in royal blue with sleeves of gold tissue; Mrs. Raikea wore # oat of pale.. green taffeta over # frock of flowery yellow and green, Mr. Lewis was in black and silver, Mrs. Nosworthy all in black and Mrs. Carrington Sykes in print- ed silk patterned all over with the tiniest of flowers. The Bord sisters were looking very nice, one in grey and the other in scarlet, with a scarlet fez, (And, who were the two in same party who danced the whole evening through in those terrible masks?) liked Mrs. Marsden's sea-green taffeta and the tiny sleeves of Mrs. Atkinson's black frock. Mrs. Fowkes was looking extremely pretty in а rather fluffy white lace, and sa WES Mrs Kyall, in a short white coat over her dress of a green and white leaf pattern. Mrs. Barry sponsored the fashion 01 big white organdie sleeves on a black frock. Mrs. Smithers had purple ribbons on her pink dress MacLean and Mrs.

AT THE 'SNAPPY VALLEY' COURSE

Saturday's racing was a. de- two pressing business only

and horses paid fat dividends. needless to say I backed neither qf them! In fact the afternoon was one long series of losses- but let's not tair about that. Thank Heaven there won't be a meeting again for several weeks. -perhaps I may find a cheque among my Christmas too.

Mrs. Fiddes-Wilson Was Very striking in black, with collar, hat, and wide sleeves of clipped white Tinson's fur, and I liked Mrs. blue and white check frock,, with the scarlet belt and hat, im- mensely. Mrs. Peter Williams had 3 lovely suit of brown corduray with a small fur, and Miss Fearon looked enviably warm in the shiniest of dark molesking. Mrs. Sheldon wore belge, with touches of green on frock and hat; Mrs. Howson' was in a soft grey tweed, Mrs. Heg- garty had a suit of navy blue, and Mrs. MacAvoy was in black with presents,

of white a waistcoat corduroy. Miss Cooper sported an eye veil with her brown suit, and so did the Mlases Boyd, What an attractive fashion this is for young girls! Mrs. Stopanie Thomson wore black, Mrs. Wolf

· had "a long" coat of soft yellow wool, Mrs. Bentley wore a yellow" blouse with her grey sult. And I must say a word or so in praise of the man in the grey bowler: It made it seem like a real Race Meeting!

But I must tell you about my fellow victims (Honestly. I don't believe anyone won last week they all seemed a bit de pressed by the end of the meet- ing. Always excepting Mrs

WINTER FASHIONS

It is getting cold in the Valley now, and I noticed most people were wearing real winter clothes despite the brilliant sunshine. Mrs. Stanton made a pleasant. splash of colour with her yellow suit and white fox furs, but the prevailing shades were more often black, brown, or navy blue. I was much attracted by two women the very latest three- quarter length sulis with match- ing hats, one in dark grey and

mante buckles, and Mrs. Bed-one in sta green, with a pale gewick wore a trock of tomato-

pink jersey top. Lady Furnival's

Miss Scott Harston had the pleasure of candidate, leading In her own “Daylight Eve," wearing a beg coming red dress with one of those new scarves which one sees in the latest fashion news. The keen air brought forth a number of fur coats, Mrs. Taggart's and Mrs. Murdock's being among the -- smartest.

The rails were well patronized, as out there the sun was shin- ning at his brightest. Miss Dod- well in a very becoming sult of. bottle-green," was chattering gally with a small group of admirers. Mrs. Turner tha smart tweed coat and skirt with fur stole Was talking to Mrs. Trearichs in black with a small black hat "tres chic," and Mrs. Sands in a brown coat with fur collar which was most attractive. We were very pleased to see Lady Southern looking so well and it after her short holiday. Mr Lewis was dressed in red, one of the fashionable: colour, this winter. Coats and shirts were very popular, Mrs. Black just returned from ba holiday at home, had a smart› black cost; and skirt with, s zilver. fox New arrivals in the Colony were there: Mrs. Kembla, who is on's visit to her son' and daugh....... ter-in-law, and Miss Fahnestoch whose father's yacht the.
