4 Gossip We Must

WELCOME BACK!

How nice it was to greet the Boathorns on their return from Home leave last Monday. It wa bad luck that the Aeneas should have arrived early, for they hap- pened to choose 'quite one of the. Toulest days imaginable, and. must have hated the very sight. of Hongkong, shrouded as it was in a genuine Peak fog. The weather cleared up a little in the afternoon; luckily, for all of us had time to hurry back and change into our "Sunday, best," ready to play in the bridge drive organised for the SP.C.A. Funds

AT THE HELENA MAY I forgot to ask exactly how many people turned up; but the 2 big roofs were both filled with tables and every table, had its full complement, to say nothing of the hostesses and some others who were wandering round see- ing that we had everything we could possibly need. Mrs. Garış. er was in charge of the games -upstairs, and looked most bual- nesslike in her suit of dark red brown elephant-crepe and her velvet hat. Mias. Scott Harston and Miss Gerrard carried round trays of sweets and cigarettes, and did a rearing trade in both, while Mrs. Dudley King and Mrs. Martel Hall were responsible for the teas. Mrs Roffey, very neat » in a grey knitted suit and black hat, saw us all settled, and then came round collecting table money in her capacious leather bag:"

- TAKING IT SERIOUSLY

Later on, when a turn at dum- my gave me a chance to look round. I noticed a very serious table of doctor's wires Mrs. Suahan in navy blue," "Mrs. Gra- ves in a blue and white crepe de chine, printed "zigzag fashion, and Mrs Reeves in fawn, with a brick coloured hat and touches of the same shade on her dress. Quite the reverse of serious was a table in the far corner-Mrs. MacLean in ryyaf hide with an adorable tricorne hat Mrs. Mac gowan also inmal blue, but with intriguing epaulettes of bine and white, a Bonsfeld all in vivid scarlet, and Mrs. Raworth (a very late arrival) in-black. But by the time I had noted all this, my partner had finished playing the hand; and since our cards went, from bad to worse, I had only scattered opportunities of studying my neighbours! saw Miss Huntingford of the War Memorial Hospital, in navy blue with a delightful wide-brimmed felt hat; Mrs. Sanger, of concert platform fame, in green; Mrs.

or again, between Vanity Fair, The Connoisseur, or Vogue ...... They're all so utterly different that I cannot bear to part with any of them! I think the ideal arrangement would be to And," say, alx friends of roughly simi- lar tastes, and order the whole lat on a sharing basis. CHINESE "LADY“ JOCKEYS

I see that quite a number of Chinese ladies are taking to rid ing these days. * Crossing" the ferry the other day. I saw Mrs.

For once in a way, I actually arrived a few minutes too early. so occupied myself in taking notes for you. Sitting near the platform I saw Lady Pollock, an enthusiastic supporter, wear- ing a navy printed frock; she was talking to Mrs. Alec Macken zic, whose golden hair was well set off by her dress of royal blue with wide puffed sleeves. Mrs. MacKichan came in with her 'mother, the former wearing dark brown with a fur collar, the latter in navy blue. Then there was a very smart Danish conting- ent-Mra Wallace Hansen, Mrs. Jensen, and Mrs. Pedersen, all in black, the first two with blouses of white satin; Mrs. Pedersen, Ivery noticed, was wearing one of those very attractive new tam o'shan- tar hats with an eye vell, Also in black were Mra, Wolf, her small hat and coat frock trim- med with chromium buttons; Mrs. Reiss, lovely in a white hal, ter collar: Mrs. Edgar Davison

It is a pity that more Chinese ladies do not take to riding, for culte apart from the fact that the ladies races at Fanling and Macro will be all the more in- teresting then riding is one of the ideal forms of exercise.
