A SASSENACH'S COMMENTS
-All, the young girls were AL their best. As a rule I. rather dislike semi-grown hair but Miss Elsie Laminert.. looked almost
soft
curls ethereal with those and a pale blue frock, Miss Joan Churchill in almond-green was both fresh arid" dainty, and I adored her high neck. I liked Miss Claire, too, in royal blue, and Miss Priestley "in purple (She arrived a "week or 30 ago on the kanchi and is spend-
the winter here with her uncle, Mr. Bernard Brown). An- other recent arrival, but this time from home leave, was Mrs. Cassidy in a delightful flowered chiffon, and a through traveller was Miss McTague in bluc satin.
Then of course there was Mias Eve O'Hagan, back from home 3 weeks ago and looking delight- ful in bamboo green silk, and Miss Audrey Steel who had only returned from England the day before very fascinating in soft Jarkspur.
Still, it was a grand party and myself I thoroughly enjoyed Next time, though, we shall have to go to the reel practices Is there always so much, sitting out to do for the non Scot? Judging by the crowd in the bar during each reel you would hardly think It would pay particularly as the reelers themselves finished with an even greater thirst each time. And do you wonder, after all.
Among the dancers I noticed that prancing and whooping? I

OUTSTANDING PERSONALITIES:
I did my best to remember for you all the frocks on the." dais, but there were too many. How ever, I made a note of the Chief tainees in her lovely cloth-of- gold, Lady Peel in white satin, Mrs. MeKichan, wife of the Vice- Chieftain, in a tiered frock of black lace, Mrs. Elliott in apri- cot, Mrs. Borrett in pale grey, and Mrs. (Doctor) Black just returned from home" leave and looking very smart with a black back ground for her dress as plaid. Earlier at the Chieftain's dimmer party downstairs I had ob served and coveted Mrs Tam Pearce's blue frilled shoulder- bands, Miss Varty's pink lace, Mrs. Taggart's scarlet velvet waistband. Mrs. Dowbiggin's long white train (which seemed to bother her quite a bit when it came to dancing the reels!)."

Miss Hop- kins wore a becoming shade of Cooper green and Miss Noreen cleverly brought out her dark colouring by white satini.
Among the most energetic of the reelers were Mrs. Hyde Lay in a soft shade of apricot, Mrš Westlake in yellow, Miss Roger with a frilled skirt and "deck quoit" shoulder bands. and Miss Harris-Walker wearing

THE BRIDGE TOURNAMENT
Have you entered for the open Contract Bridge Tournament?. I have been studying the prizes in Sernet Freres "window and 'T've set my heart on one of those clocks. In the event of our wing ing the first prize (ahem!) will the seconds be kind enough to change? Neither of those glass sets will quite go with my colour scheme. And as a matter of fact. I'm not sure that we shan't go all out for the booty. A box of per- cils would be just the thing to give somebody for that harassing

TENNIS AND CHINËSE FROCKS
I should really have written last week about the delightful afternoon I spent at the Chi ese Recreation Club when Mr. "Lolly Goldman and Mrs. Loch- her defeated Mr. Lo and Mrs. Lytton in the Colony finals. It is not the tennis I want to talk. about, bright as it was at times. I was frankly more interested in the large number of spectators almost all Chinese and their fascinating dresses against the background of green. I think it is one of the nicest grounds in Hongkong-not that I am any Judge, except from the viewport of Deacefulness-and-away-from-the "madding, crowd" and I believe of Charins this is one of the cricket.
FLOWERED DRESSES
But to return to. frocks, Mrs. Lo, the slim Tientsin tennis a visit player who is down on was very chic in plain dark blue with white gloves and the most gotgoeus black-fox fur I've seen. The sisters, Miss Lillian and Miss Fanny Wu I recognised, the former in dark flowered maroon and her younger sister in flower ed sea-green with her skirt slit bigh on one side and very slight ly on the other, which is now considered the latest. Both wore white gloves, Mrs. Ng Sze Kwong the wife of the former. Colony Champion, was in red with a short flowered coat.:: and”- Mrs. Emmy Shek looked sweet in em broidered azure silk. Two charm- ing girls, obviously sisters, drew many eyes their way-and well they might. Both were dressed alike in soft belge silk, and the jackete loveliest short, beaver with high collars. There were many more but I could never get round to describing them all. Sufficient to say that it was" all a refreshing change and most enjoyable.
