The deceased came to the Colony in 1902 as Assistant Government Analyst, and eventually became chief analyst. He had been Regis- trar of the Hongkong University and Lecturer in Chemistry, and on leaving the Government service he set up in private practice as an analytical chemist and metallurgist.

For many years, the late Mr. Franklin bad resided at Cheung Chau Island, where he was regard- ed by the villagers as "father of the island. He greatly interested himself in the amenities of the island, particularly in the provi- sion of better roads, and was one of the founders of the Residents' During the Association there. general strike in 1995 he organised the European residents into a defence Corps having himself pre- viously been a keen volunteer. He was appointed an Unofficial Justice of the Peace in 1927.

Apart from these activities, the deceased was also an enthusiastic Freemason, having been Past Grand Warden of the District Grand Lodge of Hongkong and South China, E.C., Past Master of Uni- versity Lodge 3006. E.C., Past Scribe N. District Grand Chapter of Hongkong and South China Cathay E.C., Past Principal of Royal Arch Chapter 1163 E., Past Principal of the University Chapter, and Patron of the Hong- kong and South China Masonic Benevolent Fund Corporation.

A man of sterling qualities and of a most hospitable nature, he will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends. He leaves a widow and daughter, both of whom are in the Colony, as well as one son in Eng- land and another in New Zealand. The utmost sympathy is extended to them in their sad loss.

FUNERAL

The funeral took place at the Crematorium Cuticleway Bay, last evening, when a large number of friends gathered to pay their last respects.
