PARKING SPACE

The question of parking space for private cars in the Colony has been discussed over and over again. More than one letter has been written to the Press on the subject

and so far as we know representa tions have been made to the authorities to make more adequate arrangements for this urgent need. But, while funds have been divert- ed into other channels, this prob- lem of parking space has been shelved, presumably earmarked for reconsideration at some later date.

OBITUARY

Signor Scialoja

FORMER ITALIAN FOREIGN MINISTER

Rome, Nov. 20.

The death occurred here yester- day of Signor Scialaja, a former Italian Foreign Minister-Reuter.

Signor Scialcja who was 77 years of age, began his political career comparatively late in life, although he had been for long time a member of the Senate.

He began his political career in the Sonnino Government (1910) and in those of Salandra and Boselli he was Minister of Justice.

In the Senate during the war he was president of the Fascio, the war party, which was formed from adherents of the regular parties, and as such he was very popular in Britain and France.

After the elections in 1919, he took over the portfolio of Foreign Affairs, and the representation of Italy on the League of Nations in place of Signor Tittoni who found himself no longer in agreement with the Premier Nitti on the Fiume question. Later, he dicated his loyalty to the Fascist

regime.

BRITISH POLICY" REICHSTAG FIRE NEWS SUMMARY

IN CHINA

Sir

John Wardlaw Milne's Views

Something of more than unusual interest to China appeared in the local press a few days ago from London dispatches, comments the

Chinese Republic". about a letter on China written to It was all the "London Times" by a member of the British House of Commons, Sir John Wardlaw-Milne, Conser vative M.P, for Kidderminster, in which he urged the British Govern- ment to adopt a more definite policy towards China than has been evident in the last three years, if Britain was to resume her former influence and leadership in Chinese affairs.

4

Far from the usual cry of things that have led us to expect from "die-hard Tory members of the House of Commons, in which more positive and militant policy towards China has been almost confession of faith since time memorial, the liberalism and vision of Sir John Wardlaw-Milne's utterance, has the semblance of a breath of fresh air, that is very much appreciated by us.. He urges that Great Britain should take this opportunity to aid the Chinese Government by overy possible means and to lead China back along the lines of peace and prosperity. And that if Great Britain were to adopt this policy it would mean the scrapping of the past policy towards China, which, according to Sir John, has been less positive and rather, weak in the past three years.

Goering's question is very appro- priate. In my capacity as former chairman of the Law Council and on the grounds of my conversa- tiens with many English, lawyers about this very matter, I am able to say that the prevailing opinion among the legal practitioners in England is that the parallel in- quiry carried on in London was a great affront to the law courts of a nation with which our govern- ment endeavours to maintain friendly relations.
