Night Star Unplaced: Rosy Morn Wins Freemantle St. Leger
.."
WARRINGTON GIVEN HARDEST RACE OF HIS CAREER BY VIGILANCE
(By "Morning Dew")
The outstanding feature of Saturday's race meeting was the sensational defeat of Night Star, the Champion Australian pony in the Freemantle St, Leger. Night Star was unplaced in a field of seven, the race going to Rosy Morn. A full description of the race is given below,
Trentbridge did not have much trouble in the Hong Kong St. Leger, but Warrington had the race of his life in the subscription griffins' Leger.
King's Bounty and Warrington provided the win ners for the Doubles" but so many people spotted this combination that the dividend worked out at $30.60 -which was less than pari-mutuel odds.
Mr. L. G. Frost started in seven races and obtained two wins, a second and a third. Mr. Heard had exactly the same results in seven outings, while Mr. Proulx bad two wins.
DIANA BAY WINS MILE IN CANTER
The opening race drew four starters, Diana Bay with Frost up being hot favourite. King's Jus- tice (Heard) set a fast pace early on, covering the half mile in 1.00.3. At the Rock Diana Bay came alongside the leader with Sadko well up. The two greys stayed In the van\together until the bend at the village when Diana Bay drew ahead and dropped into a comfortable stride after entering the straight. Meanwhile 'Soares brought Backe past King's Justice and at the Distance Post began visibly to pick up on Diana Bay, but the mare had so much in hand that she won comfortably enough in the time of 1.59.2 which, for her, Is a very slow performarice. Sadko was a length and half in arrears at the anish and King's Justice was four lengths behind. Blue Star was nowhere.
"Night Star's Fall
In all his appearances on the course, before Saturday, Night Star had been unbeaten. He had not only proved himself the best Aus- tralian on "this year: but also the best Australian pony up to date. When he started in the Leger on Saturday, therefore, he carried all the money,
It seems as if Pan had every- thing against him in the big race. He drew the last position at the start and Night Star was not amongst the leaders when the field was sent of. In fact he was last by many yards. Fan however sent his mount up at once, going right round the Beld to join City of Brisbane. At the five 'furlongs post the first time round Night Star and City of Brisbane were together in front of the field with Rosy Morn three lengths Echind and What's That another further length behind. The position was the same at the Rock, only Fortia, Ration and Tecumseh were now falling back rapidly.
King's Bounty."
Mr. Benny Proulx rode two win- ners on Saturday, and both were over five furlongs. King's Bounty shot into the lead when the gate went up for the Castle Peak Handicap and although several other ponies got well away they could not keep up with the ex "A" class pony, Valorous made a valiant but futile effort to catch up in the home straight, but had to be satisfied with second place. Pride of Tsingtao and Flying Tourist had a good tussle for third place and the former was just beaten on the post. The Tiger was well backed for this event, but falling to get well away at the start, was never in the picture."
the home straight still ten odd lengths to the good, but then

he responded gamely to win the race. The success was as much due to Frost's riding, as to Warrington's qualities, as a fighter. Both the owner and jockey were were given a great ovation as the pony was led in after the race.

Trentbridge Romps Home. Trentbridge among
the 1933 griffins is something like Hyperion among the 1933 three-year-olds' at Home. He is just too good for them and he walked away with the Mr. St. Leger in the most effortless manner I have ever seen a race
won.
The other starters were Cossack's Beauty (Deitz), May- flower (Sung) and charming Star (Frost), They finished in that
order.
Charming Star made the pace for the greater part of the way, with Mayflower following next some six lengths behind. Trentbridge a couple of lengths further away and Cossack's Beauty bringing up the
rear.
Trentbridge dropped into last place at The Rock and otherwise there was no change of position. Charming Star was still in front five furlongs from home, but Trentbridge took the lead before the Rock was reached and was never headed again winning `by many lengths. Meanwhile Cos- sack's Beauty and Mayflower closed up with Charming Star and the three had a good race home, Cos- sack's Beauty getting second place by two lengths from Mayflower with Charming Star a neck further

Hongkong Bank.
One of the many stately pillars which 'formed the imposing iront entrance of the old premises of the Hongkong Bank, was responsible yesterday morning for the complete destruction of a new Ford Lorry belong to the Yee Sang Tai Firm. The lorry had been sent to the scene of the demolition of the old bank building and was stationary in Wardley Street. The 'pillar nearest Eastern street, which con sisted of a number of cylindrical pieces of granites places. upon another and held by cement in between, was being lifted by a Crane when a portion of it fell and, dropping with fall force 'apon, the lorry near the driver's seat, almost cut the machine into two.

Fortunately there was near the lorry at the time and the incident was attended by no other
serious consequence,
It is learned that the huge pieces of granite which form the pillars of the bank on the Queen's Road side were placed one upon the other by the original builder, with little cement between. When two such pieces of granite are lifted together the cement may "give." at time.

Shortly after 6.15 p.m. yester- day, traffic along Des Voeux Road Central, between the Supreme Court and Ice House Street, was held up on account of a large part of what is now left of the walls of the Bank Building, being pulled down,
The writer happened to be on the scene at the time and was very much impressed with the efficient way in which this piece of work was done,
Two lengths of cables were tled round the pills and when he nad made sure that no one was in the vicinity, the foreman blew B whistle, and the steam engine; to which the cables, were attached, 'puffed away merrily. Then a loud crash, and a huge cloud of dust, and when this had blown of, it was seen that a huge section of the west wall was so much debria The demolition work, is going on extremely rapidly and it is more than likely that in the space, of a few days, there will be nothing left of what once used to be one of our most impressive buildings.

PRESIDENT REVİEWS YEAR'S SUCCESS
Craigengower C.C. will probably
A number of members of the
make strenuous efforts during the
next twelve months to grow some hair on their bald heads, and thus rank among the good bowls play- ers in the Club, for in a match yesterday afternoon, when twenty bald-headed members met. an equal number of more or lest "well thatched" members, they were trounced. The galling fès- that at the interval for tea they ture of their defeat was the fact

shots, but the tea stimulated the "hairy" men and they couldn't do a thing wrong afterwards.
The bowls match was followed by a prize distribution, the awards being distributed by Mrs. Brad- bury, wife of Mr. B. W. Bradbury. President of the Club, Mr. Brad- bury in a brief speech reviewed the year, and said that in many the activities of the Club during
respecta
the period had been
an outstanding one. He had been
a member of the Club for twenty years, but could not recall the time when there had been so much sporting activity about the place. In cricket, the last time the Club won anything at all was as far back as 1922, but last year, the second eleven, won the league, and he was hoping that the first eleven would do very well this eason.
In lawn bowl, they did not do so well as the year "before, but on the whole they had done" quite well. The first team were beaten in the league, but the second division managed to win for the second year in succession, and he hoped they would win for a third time in 1934, and thus emulate the record of the first eleven, who on a former occasion won the league three years running and thus brought the shield to the Club.
The Craigengower team also won the Spey Royal Cup, a trophy. much coveted by the various Clubs interested in lawn bowls.
"
Although they had not won league or championship - honours in tennis, Mr. Bradbury thought the Club was looking up in this branch of sport and he had great hopes for its future.
The President concluded with a vote of thanks to the ladies who have assisted the Club during the season, by preparing teas, etc.
