"SWEEPINGS"

At The King's Theatre

гр

The star of "Sweepings is sup- posed to be Lionel Barrymore. He is good-he always is—but then he is one of the few great actors of the modern screen. But in "Sweepings" the honours go not to the famous Lionel, but to Gre- gory Ratoff, who gives a magni- ficent interpretation of the part of Abe, the Jewish hired man. From the moment he first appears in s glorious quibble over the amount of wool in a "bargain" "pair of socks, to "the climax in that, great scene where he breaks. Daniel Pardway with the knowledge that he owns a major share in the store, Abe is the most outstanding per- sonality on the screen...

Helen Mack as Mamie, the one-- night love of the youngest son, has only a very small part, but she plays it to perfection; and her final gesture with a flourish · of skirts and a cheque for five thou: sand dollars is a marvel of polish- ed acting.

The rest of the cast is ordinary and the story not particularly in- teresting: but fine photography and very clever charges from scene to scene lift the am from the usual rut of slowness with a moral. The first flash of the fire that swept Chicago from end to end is

most dramatic.

After that the story drags a little

An Artist Talks On Film-Making

Film producers, divided in all else, have one article of faith to which they..cling. It is that costume spells ruin, at the box- office.

Defying this conviction, with only such as The Birth of a Nation," "Ben Bur." "The Cover- ed Wagon," "The Ten Command- ments,”; and ""The Sign of the Cross" to encourage them, the Sound City company are ..busy. bringing to the screen that en- gaging scoundrel Colonel Blood.

"Colonel Blood is being direct- ed by W. F. Lipscomb. It is" his first attempt. A scenario writer and

dramatist something of a (his "Clive of India" is to be done shortly-I believe at Windsor). Mr. Lipscomb has always cherish- ed the scenario writer's inevitable ambition to direct a picture

Well, Sound City have given him his chance, and I believe we shall hear more of him. He has an alert intelligence. a sense of humour much subtler than some of his Hulbert epics would lead one to expect, and enthusiasm. enough. to acquire a sound work- ing knowledge of his period.

It is too early yet to judge his first film as a whole, but I shali be disappointed if it is not full of action, character and amus- ing incident. Pepys solemnly pro- phesying the speedy end of tea- drinking, the King running away. from his statesmen to play with his perpetual-motion machine- out of such human touches he is rightly trying to build up a lively and credible picture of his age. A VETERAN AT 22.

Frank Cellier is playing the mid- dle-aged Irish adventurer (Blood seems to have been about Mr. Cellier's build), and Allan Jeayes the King..

Also in the cast is a newcomer to the screen, Mary Lawson. Miss Lawson has been on the stage for thirteen years and 19 now a veteran of 22 When she was 9 her sister (aged 14) decided that it was time they set to work. They got a job on the stage, and have been working ever since, in London or on tour, in pantomime musical comedy revue, stock, re- pertory and anything else that offered. More recently Mary Law- son has appeared in "White Horse Inn" and "Casanova,”

In

"Colonel Blood" she plays Pepys maid Suste, a demure little creature who eventually loses her job because Mrs. Pepys suspects her husband of a warmer interest than becomes an employer. Mr. Lipscomb, who picked her out, has. a high opinion of her ability and predicts a brilliant future.

Yet another interesting person on the lot is Laurence Irving, Sir Henry's artist grandson, who is

doing the art direction.
