Real Life Romance

Of

Its Star

Handsome star of a dozen Broad- way musical comedy hits, Alexan- der Gray has never played a more romantic role in his brilliant stage career than he did recently in real life.

While appearing in one of the featured leads in "Moonlight" and Pretzels," the Universal musical produced recently in New York and coming at the King's Theatre on Thursday. Gray slipped away from the studio one evening and eloped with Miss Peggy McCray, Oklahoma oil heiress, thus culmina- ting one of the strangest and most unusual romances in the history of show business:

NEW FILMS INCENS

LONDON

"The Only Girl"

Though it has a light and even frivolous story this is certainly a film in the grand manner, and in some ways it marks a stage in the progress which the films seem to be making, through musical comedy, to grand opera. The setting is the court of Napoleon III., and the de- praved style of the second Expire is used with real skill to produce a very pretty effect. There is a scene in a conservatory which should cer tainly delight the period-fancier, We are even shown Winterhalter at work on his celebrated picture of the Empress and her ladies, and Offenbach conducting, one of his operas There is an excellent bur- lesque of the military manners of the time and a fascinating scene of a concert given by the Empress's nieces, who play their instruments with immense concentration and quite out of tune. The story, des- cribing the attempts of a French duke to find a lady's "maid who sang to him when he was lying a the point of death, is told with great neatness and precision and.. what is more, with some tact. Thus the film ends, nut with a prolonged wene of united lovers, but with an extremely funny episode in prima donna is perded to ang by preds from a sword and the heroine's first lover forgets his woes in conduct ing the opera. The only defect of a film which provides so many his- torical and other diversions is that few of its inventions are really original and that, agreeable as it is, it never has any beauty The acting of Mias Lillian Harvey as the heroine is very pleasant, and Mr. Ernest Thesiger, who has an entirely operatic part, quits him- self very well in recitative.
