ECHOES OF 1859
22.
n Old Abomination in Restless
Cuba
April 5, 1859.
A most lamentable picture given in a letter from Cuba of the condition of the Coolles there. It says: They have nothing like the capacity of the negro for labour and endurance, and yet the same tasks are imposed upon hem. When not engaged in the field. they huddle indiscriminately, mea. women and children, in 'huts with no semblance of family ties or ob- ligations. Suicide 19 Common among them sometimes tent or a dosen hanging themselves at a time. No provision is made for their return to their native and from which they have been bugvil- ed and their masters, having no Interest in them except to get the greatest amount of work possible out of them during the period of apprenticeship, heap upon them An amount of labour that soon breaks them down and often car- ries them to the grave,

ters, Government Gazette No. 687 dated October 8, 1933).
has at length reached such a pitch as to arouse public indignation on the part of the Chinese, Two of the kidnappers were seized and tried by Lynch - Law. They were suspended by their tails and a Joss stick left burning close to. With this the bystanders and passerą by inflicted a sear, causing of course exquisite torture. Tmiserabic wretches were nearly dead Sunday.

Our advices are very meagre on the subject, and by no means in- telligible. As we understand it, the Chinese authorities have caused measures to be taken to prevent the victims from being forced away against their will. We will make ourselves acquainted with these arrangements and duly.com- municate them. The prevention of kidnapping will be effected no doubt, if the arrangements be car rled out in their integrity, but as no security is required for the performance of the contract ou behalf of the Coolle, the stain of slavery remaina. This too 13 ug gravated by a swindle, in the shape of some waste paper ingenious- ly ornamented with seals and au- tographs, besides printed charac ters in Chinese and English.
