The Doubles," conducted the second and fifth race, was won respectively by Melody and Vigil- ance, and provided a dividend of $234 to eighteen successful punt-
ers:
Honours among the jockeys were evenly divided, Mr. Frost riding two winners during the afternoon.
Favourite Disappoints. Mayflower was made a favourite for the first race, but although he provided a very good show over the first mile, the pony was tired com- ing up home' straight and wobbled à great deal. Blue Star coming up strongly in the last quarter of a mile won by four lengths from Cossack's Beauty, who in turn was three lengths ahead of May- flower. Daylight Eve was a good
fourth.
.
Carnarvon Stakes. Melody, ridden by Mr. Paul Botelho, was made a hot favourite for the second race, and did not disappoint. His victory enabled a large number of punters to get a first leg in the "doubles.”
Paul Jones and Disorderly Con- duct showed the way, with Melody
in hanging comfortably behind third place.
Before the straight was reached, Paul Jories, had drop- ped out of the race, but Disorderly Conduct stayed on to take third place. Melody passed the leader at the head of the straight and No Fear looked like joining the issue the Distance Post. but Melody proved too good and won as he liked.
Portia Trounced. There were six starters in the Australian pontes race and the pace set was a terrifié one, Rosy Morn and City of Brisbane tearing up the course with a “26. Arst quarter and a half rule in 53.1. Notwithstanding this pace. Portia caught them up on the back straight and going at a killing pace cut out the three quarters in 1.22 to lead into the straight. Meanwhile Woodland Stag had been hanging at the back of the field and asked for an effort at the three-furlongs post, came along to take the lead after en- tering the straight and won easily by a length and a half from Rosy Morn, who also passed Partia on the journey home. The race was ran in 1.51.1 which is a new re- cord for the course..
Frost Wins. Frost on Flying Tourist had the race of his life in the C" Class handicap over a mile and a quar- ter, when in the home straight Mike joined in the issue and fought out a thrilling finish over the whole of the last furlong. Harriman on Mike did all be could with his mount, whip and spurs coming into action, but the long striding tourist remained in front by
neck. Half a length behind came Ip Kul Ying on Wakefield.
Austin Plate. »
Stickypast, ridden by Benny Proulx, had a flying start in this race and led comfortably all the
round.. He way
entered the Cavaller, and Proulx rode him con- straight hotly pursued by The Adently but The Cavalier gradual-† ly drew up on Stickypast and when it became necessary to fight the issue, Stickypast was found wanting. and Deltz had The Cavalier in front at the winning post. Frost riding Per Se managed third place.
Final Send-off,
Punters received a final send-off with a big dividend of $110 when Festival Eve surprised a feld of eleven including Adam and Wem- bley Stag. The start found Helter Skelter left at the gate, and a 'pony swerved very visibly as the feld passed the stable and inter- fered with the "tail" of the runners, which included Helter Skelter. In spite of this, the pony. managed to come through the field and fight out "an Interesting issue between Festival Eve and Adam, the former winning the race, and Adam finishing a little behind Helter Skelter.
