Early Ripening Of Grapes

London: One result of the brilliant summer weather has been the rapid ripening of the grapes on the 168- years-old vine at Hampton Court Palacor Already fully a fortnight Before the normal time-the crop of 300 bunches has been cut and sold to visitors to the place.

The head gardener stated, that it was an excellent crop, much better than that of last year, and it had been a very quick season. The grapes were sold in baskets made by blind ex-. Service men at St. Dunstan's, and that institution receives a percentage of the cash paid for mich lb. of grapes. The

It bore in its prime well over 2000 bunches, and for many years supplied the Sovereign's

with grupes. Some years ago it was discovered that this enormous yield was telling on ita stamina. The number of benches was reduced to about 200 and after a few years its vigour was restored. It now regularly bears over a thousand bun- ches, but only half that number is allowed to mature, each one weighing from lb. to sb.

Grapes on the Royal vine in Wind sor Great Park are now being out. A number of banches have been sent to the King and Queen at Balmoral, and, by order of the King, several hundred, bunches will be forwarded to differ ent hospitals and institutions all over the country.

After two very heavy crops in 1931 and 1938 the vine is not, so heavily loaded with fruit this year, but about 660 bunches, with and average weight of 3 lb. a bunch, is considered very satisfactory. The vine is 15 years. old, and new shoots continue to grow.
