ECHOES OF 1859
10.—Those "Peaceful Servants
Bygone Days.
FEBRUARY 8, 1859.
A most determined and nearly successful attempt. #t. murder was made on Saturday evening on the person of Mr. Barraday a Portu- guese gentleman employed as a clerk in Messrs. Lindsay and Co.
The house is altuate in Elgin Street and was occupied solely by Mr. Barradas and one servant, a Cook, who also acted as a boy. This man had only been three days in Mr. Barradas employ. No words had passed between them but Mesars. Lindsay's compradore had told Mr. Barradas that the cook did not wish to stop unless by were also engaged, where- upon Mr. Barradas told him that If he would go on as he was for three or four days Mr. Barradas' boy would return from Macao and
should be re-engaged.

INSPECTOR RECALLED
The case in which three Chinese were charged with swindling the Tung Wah Hospital over charges for the re- moval of human remains from the new G.C.H. site at Pokfulam to Aplichau for reburial was concluded before Mr. W. The allegations made by the defending counsel, Mr. F. X. d'Almada, Snr. against Inspector Elston of the S.C‚A. at a previous hearing as to the way in which he had con- ducted the case were recalled by the tribute paid to Inspector Elston by Mr. M. K.
