Meeting New Contingency

Recent reports permit "the ob- server to form a more or less con- nected idea of what has been ur dertaken by the Soviet authoritier to meet the contingency created by the Chinese, Eastern Railway situation. Usually the latter trains carried a military crew and it is generally reported that all this rolling stock is under the supervision of the military. and rarely used for commercial transport purposes.

Prior to the revolution Russian Far Eastern railways were divided- into three sections: the Trans- Baikal railway (Irkutsk-Manchull- Stretensk): the Amur Railway (continuing to Habarovsk); and the Ussuri rallway (Habarovsk- Vladivostok with the Nikolsk- Fogranichnaya branch). This divi- sion has now been changed. The Une between Irkutsk and Vladivo- stok is now in two sections; the Trans-Baikal and Usturi railways, omitting the former Amur section.. The connecting link of these two lines is Rukhlovo in the northern- most region of the Annur, river where Jimmie Mattern, the Ameri- can airman, landed on his flight round the world.
