NEW STAR

STAR FERRY LAUNCHED

MRS. PRIESTLEY PER-

FORMS CEREMONY

Believed to be the first electrically driven ferry of its kind in the whole of the British Empire, the Electric Star," the latest addition to Star Ferry Fleet was officially launched by Mrs. H. H. H. Priestley at the South China Motor Ship Building and Repairing Works, Tokawan, yes. terday morning.

The ceremony took place in the presence of a large and distinguished gathering, and amidst the crackle of fireworks.

After the launching, speeches were made by the Hon. Mr. J. J. Paterson "Chairman of the Star Ferry Co., Ltd., and by Mr. P. M. Hodgson, Chairman of the South China Motor Ship Building and Repairing Works, who gave a comprehensive description of the vessel.

The Electric Star "which has diesel-electric engines will, shortly be put on regular service between Hong Kong and Kowloon..

On behalf of the "Star" Ferry Co., Ltd., I wish, to thank Mrs. Priestley for successfully launching our new ferry boat. This is the sixth "new vessel we have brought into service within the past nine

years and if she behaves herself as well as the previous five as I am sure she will, we shall be satis

The machinery for propelling the "Electric Star is a new type to be seen" in this part of the world-in fact, I understand it is the first of its kind to be seen within the Empire. I will, how ever, leave Mr. Hodgson to describe to you the remarkable qualities of the engines.

I again thank Mrs. Priestley in kindly launching the "Electric Star" and I wish success to the bullders. The South China Motor- ship Building and Repairing Works, Ltd.

MR. P. M. HODGSON.

Mr. P. M. Hodgson, in giving a description of the vessel, said:

You have just witnessed the christening and the launching of the new Star Ferry "Electric Star," and I must thank you for your attendance here this morn- ing so early. As I have no doubt you all want to get away to your work, I will, if you will permit me, only detain you a few minutes R

My Company is much indebted to Mrs. Priestley in coming here so early to launch the vessel, and, in wishing the owners success, we trust this Ferry will prove to be not only remunerative but satis- factory in every way.

It is said that the new ferry. will be, in all probability, only the first of a series to replace all the steam ferries of the Hong Kong Kowloon ferry fleeta. This ap pears to be a very ambitious pro- gramme of reconstruction, and one which, no doubt, will take place over a period of years, if the ship launched to-day gives the satis- faction there is every reason to suppose she should give.

The general appearance is very similar to the existing ferries with | the exception of the shorter fun- nel, the beclawatt windows in the Arst class deck shelters, and the third class deck where there will be considerably more available passenger space than on previous ferries having exactly the same overall dimensions.

This is due principally to the absence of the large engine and boller. casings. The under-deck arrangement is, however, totally different, the machinery being in- stalled in three separate water tight compartments instead of one as on the existing ferries. The central compartment is termed the

It is to be noted, how- ever, that this engine is capable of developing 800 horsepower at 800 revolutions and a maximum of 660 bhp. for one hour. In spite of the tendency there is to-day to suggest that If diesel-electric pro- pulsion is chosen, only the highest speeds of prime mover should be used, the owners have deliberately chosen a slower speed with a more imoderate rating. The main B.TH, generator is a 300 kw unit of D.C. type, and this supplies power for propulsion to one of two 420 shaft house power propelling motors. Mr. Hodgson then went on to describe the vessel. He said:

For a long time it has been urged that the Diesel Electric Ferry has a great deal to recom- mend it, and in theory most people have been agreeing with the view. Each port authority or ferry-boat owner, however, has always been Inclined to leave it to the other man to be the first to start.
