set up to inquire into the problem of fire protection on board ship. At the request of the committee, Mr. Thorolf Wikborg has prepar ed an analysis of the serious fres in which Norwegian Swedish and Danish vessels have been involved during the past few years, and the following summary is based upon the reports which appear in the "Norges
Handels og Sjofartati. dende."
Copra.
The subject of fires in cargo 13 ships naturally falls into three parts Corps dires, chemical fires, and oil fires Bag copra which al ready had a bad reputation, start- ed the series of fires in 1017 with the Swedish Peking, followed by tte Tisaaren in 1919, and the In- dus in 1921, both of these vessels also being Swedish. All three had to be flooded: the Peking capsized and the Indus was sunk by gunfire. Then it was the turn of the Nor- wegian Vinstra in 1923 at Naples, the Danish Formosa at Copenhagen in 1994, the Norwegian Tana out side Valencia, and the Tricolor at London in 1926, the Yarra at the Solomon Islands in 1927, the Tha: latta in the North Sea in 1999, the Danish Alsia. ut Hamburg in 1939, and the Norwegian Barongn in the Red Sea in 1933. Most of these fires occurred in port; others shortly after leaving port, the longest time from leaving port to discovery of the fire being 20 hours. Most of the fires broke out aft of the engine-room; as a rule, the cause of the fire was found.

3-Ventilators should be turned away from the wind and the bat- ches opened at Eo after end to en- ablo gases to escape.
4-Spark arresters on all venti
lators.
5.-With a view to restricting a fire, once broken out, it is advis abic for the shelter-deck hold to be divided up by bulkheads, so that extinction or smothering of the fire by means of carbonic acid gas can be more effective. If copra has to be carried in undivided shelter dock, it is recommended that spaces should be left, such as at each hatch, and in any case the bold at the sides if the engine room casing sould be kept free of combustible cargo. In case of a fire in such shelter-dock holds valuable time would be lost if the hatches were battened down and carbonic acid gas used, instead of attacking the fire with water and as quickly as possible making an opening in the hold which the fire could not jump across."

What has been said about copra also applies to groundnuts; oil cake, &c., and jute and cotton. These last have the peculiarity that if a spark falls on a bale the fibres glow inside the bale, and it may be some time before the smell of fire is noticed. If discovered in time, a fire in jute or cotton cargo can usually be limited by shifting the affected bales to the deck. A. typical example of this was pro- vided by the Swedish motorship Trolleholm in 1902. Fire broke out under No. 3 hatch in the shelter. deck hold, which fortunately was provided with bulkhead After using 30 cylinders of carbonic acid gas the are was smothered suffi ciently to enable the crew to shift the burning bales on to the deck while water was being played on
