CLUB DE RECREIO EN FETE

EXCELLENT PRODUCTION OF

"MADAME JOTTE”

(BY OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT)

To a great many people, Club de Recreo.is no different from the other recreation clubs in the Colony, where its members gather to play cricket, tennis, bowls, billiards and other games. To those who know Recreio more intimately, its more than a club. It is the beadquarters of the Portuguese commun.ty, or those of them who live in Kowloon at least, and more than just sporting events are or ganised at Recreio.

CA Wright and S. A. Gray (13.3) beat R. B. Hambly and A. E. Collins (-3.6) in, the Kowloon Cricket Club 1939 Men's Doubles Handicap Final, played on the K.C.C. courts on Saturday after noon. The scores were 3-6, 6-4, 97. This was Gray's second, success in this year's tournament and Ham bly's third appearance in the finals. It has become the recognised in none of which did he or his pair social meeting-ground of the Portu- guese people, so much so that whenever they have a wedding, it would be considered unusual if the reception were not held in the beautiful and spacious hall of the Club. But that is not all. Mem- bere of the Club-both ladies and men-are well-known for their ver satility, and one of their strongest points is music and theatricals. And at this stage, I shall delve into history.

In the Mixed Doubles Handicap Final, played on Friday, G.. C Burnett and Miss O. Dalziel (18) beat C.I. Stapleton and Miss M. Griffiths. The winners were actual ly 2-4 down in the final set but at this point they asserted themselves and playing determined tennis. reeled off four games to win the set and match. The scores were 8-6, 3-6, 6-4.

Miss Griffiths played well and had hard luck in failing to win her third successive title in this event.

The only event in the tourna ment left undecided is the Club Championship. The players re- maining in the competition aro Teddy Fincher, holder A. E. P Guest, last year's runner-up and W. C. Hung Fincher and Great will meet in the Semi-final this week, the winner to play Hung in the Final.

Theatricals.

ance and it would be no exaggeru- tion to say that every one of the audience went away with the none- too-common feeling that it was au evening well spent and enjoyable from first to last. Everyone of the cast was good but special mention must be made of the Misses Elst Alves, Sylvía Remedios and Carmen Botelho. Mr. Leo D'Almada, jor. the well-known local barrister, who What played the title role in Happened To Jones" was excellent, while Mr. Jose Basto, made price- lesa French waiter.
