Borrowed Putter's Magic
In Golf Final
Hon. Michael Scott Beats T. A. Bourn And Sets Up A Record
RESULT NOT IN DOUBT AFTER THREE HOLES
The Hon. Michael Scott, of the Royal St. George's Club, won the British Amateur Golf Championship at Hoylake de- feating in the final T. A. Bouru, of Sunningdale, by 4 and 3. Scott, who is 65 years of age and a ruember of a family of distinguished golfers, has the distinction of being the oldest player ever to win the title.
In 1902 Charles Hutchings, a well-known Birmingham golfer, who was 53 years of age and a grandfather at the time, won on the same course.

**The Putter Did It!” To my surprise, he appeared in who, it was imagined, could not the final with a steel-headed putter possibly live against the younger which performed miracles, so much generation of players, who hit the so that when his friends snobbed ball such vast distances that holes, him with their congratulations at of 450 yards and upwards are the end of the match he brandished reached in a drive and a mashie the putter above his head and said, niblick shot."
Scott was playing a nan twenty five years his junior, and yet the disparity in age and all that it im plied no difference to the plan of Pampaign whirh the older map out lined for himself. He hit the ball straight down the course," not astonishingly far, to be sure, but, the fair generally speaking, on way, a matter of great importance, at Hoylake, where to be off the course means the loss of a good part of a stroke.
If you want to know who won the championship, well, this did!"
The putter, by the way, is not the property of Michael Scott, but of the Hon. Denys, who loaned it on the eve of the final because his brother was in despair about his patting. "If ever a club won" a championship; this sleek-beaded implement, which never failed to hit the ball into or past the hole- the hallmark of confident putting- most certainly did."
This was a great day for the His second shots, with wood, or elderly golfer, for when Scott iron were hit with the same preci-holed his last putt at the fifteenth sion, and when it came to the pub to win the title, John Ball, the ting there was only one player in hero of countless championships- the picture--and thereby hangs ten British victories to his name tale. All the years I have known Scott he has, with the exception of a few firtations with nondescript puters, always used an aluminium implement.

Bourn's Two Weaknesses,
It is an interesting point that. when Scott won his first cham- pionship in Australia; Bourn was exactly one year old. A measure of sympathy must be extended to Bourn, who in the space of two months has reached the final of
and has been two major events beaten in both, curiously enough, by the same margin.
It is not so much that Bourn is an inaccurate striker of the ball in the long shots, but that his put- ting seems utterly to have deserted him. He haa' two weaknesses; first, he seems incapable of getting up to the hole, and, secondly, he appears to be scared to death of the putt of from 3ft. to 5ft. At [004 one time Bourn struck the ball with the same smooth follow. through as the best American play- er, but to-day he merely jabs at it and hopes for the beat. In these circumstances the best becomes the worst.

The climber will know his own deficiencies, will note 1-6in other players the shot to which he aspires, and will watch and study the stroke. He will watch it from the end of the court (it is ensier thus), will note the swing of the racket, the position of the feet before the stroke, during the stroke, and at the finish; for the feet are eloquent evidence as to the body's" rotation, the proper production of which is always a vital element.
"Style" should always be taught, not for "swank" or effect; "style" is simply the making of the stroke in the easiest and most · effective way. This entails a proper plac ing of the feet ("footwork"!) and the consequent correct employment of the trunk muscles. Vines is a good instance of "style" if one studies his service, One can note the correct placing of the fact, the sideway stance to the net, the The match, which was witnessed.
