these premises were found to be inadequate. In June, 1914, an out- "break of plague at these premises necessitated a change of quarters and temporary accommodation was found in the Bank Extension in Des Voeux Road. This again proved too small for the "Y" and as a suitable place could not be found, it was decided to suspend work until such time as more adequate premises were obtained. In June, 1916, a drive was made for funds for a building for the Association and this resulted in $140,000 being collected.

DEAR SIR,-Reference has already been made in the local press to the coal dump on the land between the Kowloon Canton Railway and the sea, facing Chatham Road. derstand that this privilege has been granted by the Kowloon Can ton Railway to a Japanese firm of coal merchants, and doubtless for the profit of all parties concerned. Since the land in question be. to the Kowloon Canton longs" Railway, a department of the Government of Hongkong, it is pre- sumed that they consider they may do as "they please without the slightest consideration for owners and occupiers of neighbouring pro- I venture to submit, Sir, perty. that bad that land been privately owned, and the owners had the audacity to commit such an outrage. in indicting such a nuisance and

Yet a Government Department ap parently may commit such an act with impunity:

It is unnecessary to refer to the nuisance that has already been suf- fered by nearby residents in Cha- tham Road from coal dust whilst the dumping has been in progress, nor what may be expected when typhoons visit the Colony, strong winds prevail from the N.E., E. or S.E. Apart from the nui sance caused to residents, the con- tinuance of this coal dump outrage will have the effect of deteriorat ing the value of property in the vicinity, the demand for lower rents in consequence, and the very probable vacating of premises by existing tenants. The Government revenue from rates also will be affected.

Established Here 33 Years Ago. · Nearly 33 years ago the Rev. W. Southam came to the Colony as the enthusiastic representative of the International Committee of the Y.M.C.A. to establish Y.M.CA. work here. Me Southam studied local conditions and worked quietly for some time until the moment seemed ripe for a definite proposal, At the first meeting called, it was decided to go ahead with the scheme, and, after some months of hard work, the official opening of the Y.M.C.A. took place on May Y, 1904, the premises being on the top floor of Alexandra Building Early in 1908, Mr. Southam had to return to Canada and his place was taken by Mr. J. McPherson who has been with us ever since and who, to-day, is still one of the hardest workers for the good cause of the "Y" It was mainly due to his labours that the Y.M.C.A has grown from strength," and the present building is good testimony to the hard work, Mr. McPherson had done to develop the little baby that was born on that memorable May Day in 1904.

stands. This was first recommend- ed by the late Sir Claud Severn and later secured by Sir Edward Stubbs with the consent of the

Secretary of State for the Colonies.

At the outset the Directors only hoped to put up a comparatively small building but in 1992, the "Y" received a generous grant of G.$75,000 from the International Committee of the Y.M.C.A. and this generous gift enabled those in charge to put up the fine building, that was later opened by Sir Cecil Clementi.)

Since then, the " has 20ne from strength to strength and an additional wing has already been put up, complete with awimming bath and other amenities. The ex- tension, it will be remembered, was opened by H.E. Sir William Peel. At the present rate of progress, it would not be at all surprising if further extension would be neces eary in the near future.

The X.M.CA. is not only a home for single men out from Home. It serves a much bigger purpose, but- that is too well-known to need re capitulation here.
