CLEVER COLOUR SCHEMES AND

DECORATIONS

Within a few weeks, possibly by, the middle of next month, the official opening will take place of

of the finest buildings in | Queen's Road Central-the China Emporium.

one

The work on the building itself has been completed, the scaffolding on the cutside has been taken down and those who pass the spot at Queen's Road where the Emporium stands, cannot fail to be impressed with the beautiful appearance of this building, in which the blending of Eastern and Western style of architecture has been harmoniously achieved,

But while it would seem to the casual observer that the building stands finished, this is in fact by no means the case a the ambitious designs intended for the interior have necessitated quite a volume of work to be carried out by way of interior decoration and special furnishing.

A Daily Prest representative who was favoured with permission to go over the building found a hive of activity on every floor. Carpenters, painters, electricians, i masons and overseers were all busy pating the finishing touches to the various new features in the build

ing,

The Colour Scheme.

When the Emporium is opened to" the public next month, the feature of its jaterior which will stand out most will be the artistic colour scheme employed in that part of the building which will be used as the store. The designer has chosen 3 tasteful combination of light green and black, in which the darker colour appears in such a proportions as to render the whole, place bright and airy.

On the ground floor, workmen were busy with shelves that line the walls and with showcases for the The first and second floors presented an equally busy scenes, and here the show- cases are to be much higher and there were quite & number of counters. The next two floors, the third and fourth, also were in the hands of workmen and from the appearance of the fourth floor it would seem that the Emporium'a offices would eventually be housed there.

The most interesting floor at pre- sent is the fifth, intended for a European style restaurant and dance ball. From its appearance it will make an attractive dance hall, -but it

stead tea and dinner dances, very much on the lines of those con- ducted now at the Hong Kong Hotel will be the order of the day. The walls of this room are of the same light green as the lower floors only here the artist has interspersed the green with generous patches of gold and pink making the room look even larger than it really is. The size of this room is about the Peninsula Hotel and the tables and same as the roof garden of the chairs are coloured in green and black to match the walls. The bandstand is one of the features of the interior decoration on this floor, being on one side of the ball and designed like a small Chinese temple, while the bar is so well coloured that it seems to be part of the wall on the far side of the room.
