Saturday, July 22, The profit-taking liquidation in Telephones and Hong Kong Trama appears to have been well absorb ed, and both of these issues were very steady this morning at $30 and $23 respectively. Other issues which have recently become active, after remaining comparatively dor- mant for some time past, are Wharves and Star Ferries, for both of which there appears to be a strong demand.

Overstocked at Low Prices, Explaining the situation, the Japanese press states that, attract- ed by the low prices through the depreciation of the yen exchange, overseas traders bought heavily List year, so that it was not necessary; for them to buy much this year. One of the most remarkable facts is the sharp shrinkage in the export to India, for which the tariff in crease in September last is held responsible.

Tokyo. The Department of Fi ndace will not conduct conversion - Early advices indicated the open- operations of national bonds for the ing rate at 1/211/16 but the rate present. In its opinion a success suddenly jumped to sellers at 1/2. ful conversion can be done only 7/8 August. Subsequently the sell when Japan surmounts the budgeting rate gradually rose to 1/5 at ary difficulty and need not have recourse to 'loan issue for cover- ing a revenue deficit.
which rate business was done for near delivery. At the close there were sellers at 1/3 for near and 1/31/10 August, buyera at 1/10 higher respectively.
As evidenced by the recent lowering of the offcial bank rate, the money market has now become much easier, and this, together with the violent rise in the market quotation for bonds, makes the question of converting old loans to a lower rate of interest a matter of reality. Everybody who advo- cates B reconstruction of State ( finance not to mention the Seigu kal and Minseito-emphasises the need of conversion operations to give relief from the burden of in terest.
Waiting for More Settled Times.
The Financial Bureau, which has been studying the problem carefully for some time, has now come to the conclusion, however, that the time is not yet ripe for the conver sion of all five per cent. issues totalling approximately 3,900,000,- 000 at this moment.
The only feasible plan is to conduct the con- version in lots of say Y500,000,000, but in that case the saving in the interest burden will not be big.
The best thing is for the Govern ment to postpone the whole opera tions until such a time as Japan" has come through the financial emergency and is hopeful to be able to avoid any loan issue to make good a revenue deficit. This view of the Financial Bureau, it is expected, will be laid before Mr. Takahashi, Minister of Finance.

Asia Lands, Limited, has received the following report from their New York correspondents, E. A. Fierce & Co. It looked as though a sub- atantial amount of distress selling, the aftermath of the past three days, was cleaned up this morning. The tarkat obviously has better support and greater degree of resistance. However, instead of a spontaneous quick re-bound, the market may simply stabilisa and turn quieter. Wheat: The Chicago market suspended trading today. Winnipeg whent Buctuated over wide limits in early selling on Eastern and Chicago interests. This liquidation, with stop-loss selling, was well taken. The consensus of opinion was that the worst had been seen. Cottons. Values opened higher on overnight buying orders, mostly on Trade account. The "advance attracted renewed liquidation, causing prizon to drop sharply. The West Belt has been rainless, with showsky 'con- ditions in the East Belt Silver: This market felt the infance of further liquidation encountering stop-loss selling orders. Later bank began baying, particularly after news of the silver agreement having been reached at the London Conference, Trading was heary, Until further notice the New York stock exchange will open at twelve noon instead of at ten o'clock
